Spoke with my mechanic and he recommends that I replace all 4 transmission solenoids. I took the rig in to have the birthfied(sp) repacked per his and everybody here's recomendation. The trannny seemed to work fine before I took it in, before I left with it he says to me that I need to have all 4 solenoids replaced job cost $800  Anyways now the rig gets stuck in first gear which it didn't before I brought it in to him. Am I being scammed, is there a way the guy did something to my tranny to make it get stuck in first gear. I'd appreciate any feedback on this situation it would help if I was better inform before I plunked down more cash.

Thanks in advance

Did your mechanic do ANYTHING to the tranny (tranny power flush, etc.)? If he did a power flush, that might have done it. In any case, I would question him further about what work he did on your tranny if it was working fine before he touched your vehicle.

I have seen a couple 442's with solenoid issues. In both cases the transmissions would not go into 1st gear. Now that does not mean that you couldn't have a solenoid problem but the circumstances are suspicious. What all was done to the vehicle when it was in the shop?

He didn't do anything to the tranny in particular. I had in the shop for three things

1. Birthfield(sp) repacking
2. Rear main seal leaking, had to be replaced
3. AC service

You guys think replacement of all four solonoids is wise, or do I just replace one solonoid? Total jobs cost for all four would be around $800. This car is costing me more than I thought, Total cost so far including the cost of the cruiser is $12000, better last me for a long time.

just hard to believe that the trans was fine, you bring it in, doesn't work any more afterward and the mech says it needs work...
Aside from mischief, could he have bumped something when doing the main seal? cable etc?

There is your source. The transmission needs to be removed to replace the rear main seal. Something did not go back togther right. Maybe he damaged the transmission wiring harness.

He had to pull the tranny or the motor to replace the rear main. He obviously screwed something up. Maybe he screwed up the shifter linkage. HE needs to fix and/or pay for it.

Thank You guys, all this information is very helpful. I will make sure to use it when I speak with my mechanic again.
