Hello there,

Hoping to get a quick answer on this one. I am going through and doing a lot of PM on a new to us 94 LC, before some longish roadtrips here in NorCal. I was underneath before changing the oil and spotted this. I feel a bit ignorant, as this is my first rodeo when Land Cruisers are concerned...

Photo is taken from beneath looking up towards the oil filter.

Would appreciate any help or tips.

Thanks

I don't see many leaks - can you draw an arrow or something?

You should see the bottom of mine - not nearly as clean as yours.

Major sources of oil leaks are valve cover gasket, distributor oring and oil pump cover gasket. Take care of those and 95% of any oil leaks will be gone.

Thanks for the response....

Valve cover is bone dry, brand new distributor... The oil is collecting at the bolt in the center of the photo.

Is it atf? That bolt has a oring inside there you can change, power steering pump runs atf also dexron 3

If the leak is power steering fluid then as mentioned above, probably the small O-ring behind the suction pipe assembly. If engine oil it could be blown back from the front (oil pump cover is common), or from between the pump and the engine; there is a large O-ring in that location. Or, the last time the engine oil was changed someone was really sloppy and spilled oil on the pump.

You could wash off that area well at a car wash from above and below (include the bottom front of the engine), then take more photos soon afterwards to try to identify where the leak starts from.

This is my new 93. I think the photo is of the same area but from a different angle. You were saying you have a leak?!?! :grinpimp:

Start at the coin-op wash with a can of engine degreaser and spray down the whole engine. Then drive home and it should be dry by then, and check for any apparent leaks. Check daily for a few days and you'll get a better view of the culprit. I had to change my PS pump the 2nd day I had mine, and, it's a pain in the ass! Took about 3hrs start to finish, as it took about 30min to de-burr the threads in the replacement pump.

I am almost certain it is the steering pump and it has a bit of a droan as i pull up steep inclines while turning. My OCD ways has had me cleaning the undersides and i will try to hit the problem area one more time... I gotta find a decent steamcleaning service by I-50 where i can have the undersides really cleaned. The top of the motor is remarkably clean. Thanks though, im dreading the PS pump project.

It's not as bad as one would think. I bought a reman pump off the web, groan from the start! Bought a pump from the dealer, just need to put it in! Im also thinking I need to upgrade my PS cooler and put hydraulic oil in it instead of PS fluid.

Foothill80: IME steam cleaning is not required; the regular soap using the wand at the car wash works fine and is gentler on some components. The strong engine degreasers can also damage painted and rubber components so I avoid them. Cover the distributor, brake reservoir, and both dipsticks with plastic bags and avoid spraying high pressure water directly at any harness bundle or connector. Do not wash the top of the valve cover or you risk drowning your spark plugs. FWIW.

I'd be interested in the part number as well.

Same here... Is that o ring available separately?

Sorry about bringing back an old thread but I have a leak in the same place, any updates on the part # and when I remove the bolt will all the fluid come out? Any help would be appreciated

Mine is leaking here. What is this? How do I fix? Thanks.
Oil pump cover and a few others.

Most oil leaks can be solved with the following list:
Oil pump cover
Front Main Seal
Valve Cover Gasket
Spark Plug tube seals
PCV grommet
Distributor O-Ring
Power Steering Hoses
Transmission cooler hoses

These can all be done at or near the same time frame, particularly if you are pulling the radiator for any reason, that's the time to do all these.

Currently chasing the leak dragon as well. I have recently replaced oil pump seal, front main seal, and distributor O-Ring. I have plans to check way down this list, any you see as a higher priority? I am still getting some leakage if I run it for a long time. She has 385k so it’s no spring chicken.

I replaced that exact Oring a few weeks back on mine. Always thought id have to do the whole PS pump but after cleaning the area and seeing the weep I thought id just change the ring and see. sure enough no more leak.
if you can just unbolt the pipe and take the old Oring to a bearing place and match one up & see

Just start at the top of the engine and work your way down.
