The Land Cruiser is a 1994 FZJ80 with 231000 miles located in Payson, Utah. The engine is strong and in good working order. We actually took it to a Toyota mechanic with the intention of getting it rebuilt, but he recommended against it because compression was good and it had no issues. I think it may have been rebuilt before we bought it, but the previous owner didn't mention it and was not in the service records from the shop that did most of the maintenance. It also has factory electric lockers.
We have owned the cruiser since Oct. 2000 and have had no major mechanical problems. I have done routine maintenance including but not limited to oil changes (usually synth. blend or full synthetic), tranny fluid drain/refill, axle R&R (including bearing replacement), grease driveline, coolant flush/refill, air filters, wash/wax (had it detailed last fall). It does have some minor issues that I haven't gotten around to fixing: PS fluid leak (slight leak, bought gasket kit to rebuild, but haven't gotten to it yet) and oil leak (just a couple drops overnight). The axles and transfer case have Mobile 1 synthetic gear oil.
I have replaced/serviced the following items
- New rotors and pads '02
- Axle rebuild '02
- Slee sliders and rear bumper '03
- Complete front axle overhaul: remanufactured birfields, new OEM differential, axle shafts, seals, and bearings. Done by Kurt Williams of Cruiser Outfitters. July '04
- Replaced cracked air intake hose '04
- New cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. '05
- Pesky heater hose (PHH) '05?
- ABS front wiring replacement '05
Mods/upgrades
- ARB front bumper
- Slee sliders
- Slee rear bumper
- OME medium duty 2.5" lift (springs, shocks, steering stabilizer)
- Center diff lock switch
- Pin 7 modification (allows unlocked center diff in low range)
- Roof rack (negotiable)
The cruiser has been well taken care of and most miles have been on road. It is built for wheeling and we've taken it to Moab many times. We use it, but don't abuse it.
Around mid-December, a teenage driver who was high, drove a Durango into our yard and hit the cruiser in the driveway. The Slee bumper took most of the impact but rear quarter panels were both damaged because he had enough momentum to push it into our van which was parked alongside it. Long story short, the insurance company totalled it out and we bought it back from them. Had a clean title before this. After going back and forth, we decided to sell it and build up our 100. Big reasons: one less vehicle to insure, maintain, spend $$ on, and the 100 is capable of wheeling plus towing our camp trailer. Selling the 80 will give us funds to build it up. The 80 has been a great family wheeler and we had no intentions of selling it before the accident. Would love to see it go to a loving home. Repair estimates were $4000 to over $7000, so I figured it would be a great hard-core wheeler (don't have to worry about body damage!
)
Here are some pics before the accident (the winch and 315s are moving over to the 100 so I will provide used tires or credit )
