I put new starter contacts in it last year as PM. Today, while running errands (warm car) it would not start. Lights on dash as normal, click behind dash as normal, but no click emanating from starter. Pounded on the starter while someone held the key over, but nothing. After a few minutes, I came back out and the starter engaged as normal and off I went.

I bellieve the lack of click at the starter indicates no problem with the starter contacts, as if they're at fault, you'll still get a 'clack' at the starter but the contacts are too chewed up to make the connection.

I also put it in Neutral with no change.

So, without the clack, what are people finding to be at fault? I did not replace the plunger as it looked like it simply needed its face cleaned up and did that as well as lubed the plunger ass'y and spring. Clearly the plunger's not moving, so it's something before that.

It is possible that one of the new contacts went in "cocked". If they are not perfectly perpendicular to the plunger face they will wear rapidly. It is a challenge to prevent them from "rolling" a bit when they are tightened up.

Yeah, saw the 300lb pressure install note in the FSM. But re read my post and loosen your bandanna, Willy! I think the contacts are not at issue as they're not even being engaged - no "clack" from the starter. In fact, no noise at all.

If there were a clack and the starter did not turn over, I'd pull the starter tonight and get the contacts in order.

OK,

Don't believe me then.

Maybe yer neutral safety switch is out of adjustment.

Sounds like the same problem I've encountered... Not done it now in a few weeks since temps came back into the 20+'s. We've got a bunch of snow so havent gotten underneath to check the P/N switch... But its between that, and the ignition switch behind the key cyl...

BruceP is having the same prob and has replaced everything but the P/N switch I believe..

So, the neutral switch would be suspect despite my moving the shifter to N, P and back again with no results? And what was the "P/N" switch noted above?

I suspect "park/neutral" switch.

Movement would depend upon where the contacts "landed" after going back and forth.

Yes, P/N i'm talking about the park/neutral switch. According to that other thread I referenced the relay for this is on the outside of the tranny. I've mostly had problems when its wet.....

Don't discount the battery cables as well. Wasn't it Eric a while back that found his ground cable all crapped up? You can get the click with a faulty connection, but the cables just can't supply the juice necessary to pull the plunger in...
