I know most of this will sound super noobish but I'm looking at and really liking a '92 that has been a single owner vehicle that was really well maintained w/ 130k. I've already looked at it once. It's got an oil leak, probably rear main, that doesnt seem to be too bad but it has been a yuppie mobile and the guy really took care of it (he showed me a huge packet of records). I'm thinking that if i can get him under 6k im gonna go for it. Am i getting ripped here?
Also, I'm pretty sure factory lockers didn't come around until '93, but it has that diff lock switch. I know this is super noobish, but is this just for the front? Thanks in advance

6k is the upper limit on 91's and 92's. Dig into that stack of receipts and see what has been done and ask questions.

Center Diff. Lock switch locks the front and rear axles at the transfer case. No axle lockers on 91's and 92's.

Good luck

Well, I looked through some of it and he seemed to have most of the scheduled maintenance done. He pretty much replaced the whole a/c system last year along with wear and tear stuff recently- new alternator, water pump etc. All in all its very clean but I know he's asking too much for it. It holds a lot of sentimental value to him but that's not really the kind of value I want to pay for

FWIW, I got my '91 for $4100. 121K miles, interior in excellent condition, fair paint, above-average mechanical condition. And this is in California, where everything (including 80 series 'cruisers) are more expensive than they are everyone else. Sounds like you are looking at a rig that was very similar to mine when I got it. If you can't talk him down to at least $5K, take your money and look elsewhere.

For that price, check on whether the front axle has been serviced. They're good vehicles, but can be had for less.

Pookie bear- the guy who has it isn't short on cash, thats for sure. He's got a BMW and his wife drives an Audi. This was mainly the truck they used to take to the lake house. If any service lights came on he took care of the problem but I don't know about the likelyhood of him servicing the front axle. It would mainly be a DD for me right now. There's also an '88 (sorry, I know this is the 80 forum) that I might look at with about 150k. Its seems to be in decent condition as well and I think I gould get it for about 4k. Do you guys have any major gripes about the 80 series? The paint is oxidizing and it has a cracked dash which seems to be the norm for that vintage, but again nothing major from what I can tell. Again, thanks for any help you guys can provide

Post up some pics if you can. $6k is high for anything but perfect.

Does look very clean, but 6k is steep for a >95.

I have an 89 62 & 91 80. Both great trucks with the same engine. The 80 hauls more people, has a better ride & is full time 4wd. The 62 is 1000 lbs lighter(you really notice 1000 lbs with a 3fe in the hills) imo more of a classic look. If I was gonna buy one of those two, and both are in good shape I would go for the 62. Your paying a big price for not a huge difference imho to get the 80. Definatly get a cruiser though and welcome to mud.:flipoff2:

any pics of the 88 for sale?

BTW, patience may pay off here. i dont think alot of people will be beating down his door for a 92 for 6K. Wait and keep in touch with him. You may end up with it for the $ you want if you dont rush it.

Adding to the price references, I picked up a '92 with 143,000 miles for $4500 a couple months ago. Everything in good condition with the exception of the front tires. I'm also a noob so I feel your pain.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm hoping I'll get it (the '92) for $5100. The oil leak isn't the rear main, almost positive its the valve cover gasket, so I feel better about that. Its a really nice rig and I'm keeping my fingers crossed he doesn't sell it to someone else

Regarding the valve cover gasket- are they as easy to replace as they seem?

Yes, pretty much that easy.

FWIW, he won't sell that for 6K, I'd kindly offer him $4500 with your phone number and have him call you when he's tired of trying for sky-high.

I think you could find a well-maintained '93+, maybe with higher miles, but around that price is not out of the ordinary.

...but I'm catching that 3FE thing too, so if it floats yer boat, then go for that one!

g'luck, Dan.
