The display has failed on my OEM radio. I have looked into it and the displays fail in similar way as a vacuum tube. I have found to way to repair the OEM head unit.

I'd like to install a head unit from a 2002 Toyota Highlander. I have two # 86120-52241 units that are said to be working. They are double din and have the mounting holes in the right places to fit correctly.

I do not want to cut into the factory wiring. I see pigtails are available for the 2002 unit. I see that there may be female plugs that attach to the truck's molex. I have found some Russian wiring documents on the web. I home-brew electronics as a hobby. Matching the wires in the truck to the new head units must be done correctly.

Has anyone done this job? Any words of advice? Resources?

Thanks in advance

I put a 2013ish Scion deck in my 96. Wiring wise... I plugged it in. The stock wiring worked as it was, though the factory amp had already been deleted. I don't know how different the wiring is on a 92 vs a 96, but it might just work. You'll obviously want to hunt down the wiring diagram for your Cruiser and google the pinout for the head from the Highlander, but it may require... nothing.

I have looked into it once to replace the old head unit with a new one from the same era. The plug in the vehicle is odd and I can not find a schematic for it or for he OEM radio.

Based upon your statements in this thread I think your are trying to reinvent the wheel. There is a wealth of information on this forum that you need to study. Our land cruisers have two sets sets of plugs. One is somewhat a unique plug that is used with the OEM amp. The other are a pair plugs (white) that plug into most Toyota radios. The odd plug you speak of is for use with the amp which generally low quality. There are harnesses you can easily buy off Amazon or a stereo shop that can be used to wire any aftermarket radio with little effort.

The electrical wiring diagrams you refer to can be found in the FSM and Wiring manuals that can be downloaded from the resources section of this website.

Good to know the information is out there. Anyone care to share? Why be cryptic? I thought the point of the forum is to share knowledge rather than berate someone who asks a "stupid question"

You think that was a cryptic post? I gave you very specific information that obviously you didn't even take the time to basic search.
Good luck trying to get help with that attitude,

@ppc is a touch blunt about it, but he's kinda right. You could search and find the threads, or someone else could... search... and find the threads. I found it all when I went looking, but it's not like I remember exactly which threads were useful to me.

Mostly what I was saying in my earlier post is that Toyota has been using the same main connectors (I think it's 20 pins total between the two) for YEARS. They generally seem to be more or less compatible across models, and I suspect it's the same on your 92 and probably on the Highlander as well. The general consensus on the factory amp is that it isn't worth the trouble to use. If you post a pic of the back of the Highlander head, I can probably tell you what the connectors on it are.

I just don't think you're going to get a "Here's a link to the exact connector you need, order it and done" type of answer.
