Gentlemen,

My de-smog'd 91 3fe has been having voltage surging issues due to a bad alternator/regulator. While diagnosing the issue, I disconnected the battery and removed the alternator. I reinstalled the alternator and all seemed fine. Truck cranked and ran as it normally does. Yesterday, however, I could not get the truck to start. It would just crank as long as I turned the key. I seemed to have voltage, but I tried jumping it off and still got nothing. I checked the fuses and all seemed fine. I finally disconnected and reconnected the battery and it started, however, it idled extremely low (200-400 rpm). I figured that the ECU may needed to be reprogrammed after disconnecting the battery due to the EGR delete. So, after a long drive, the idle came up to normal range. I turned the truck off and restarted and idled normal again. This morning, the truck cranked, started, and idled normally, but after a short drive to work, it would crank, but not start again as it did last night.

All this after removing and reinstalling the alternator. I'm at a loss. Has anyone run into this issue before?

Thanks.

did you try wracking the starter and see if it fires? Could be starters, could be NNS wiring. I was dealing with this issue for years, put in a Ford solenoid and couldnt be happer and it fires right up every time for the past 3 yrs now.

During the "crank-no start" does the CHECK ENGINE light illuminate with the key in the on position BEFORE cranking the starter?
No CEL=NO START
