So I went out for some fun int he snow with my friend. I was leading the way in my 80, he was following in his Jeep Cherokee. There was a wash-out to navigate, some smallish logs to run over, and plenty of snow, but nothing major. Well, eventually I noticed he wasn't behind me anymore. I backtracked and found him sitting dead in the middle of the trail. After some digging and head scratching as to where to hook up my tow strap I yanked him clear fo the drift. Left behind was his rear drive shaft. The universal joint near the rear diff had exploded. We found most of the parts, transferred his son and all of their gear into my cruiser and decided there was no sense in heading back and made camp for the night a few more miles up the road.

We checked to see if the truck would move with "front wheel drive" only, and it does. Should we be concerned about fluid leaking out? There was no U joint near the transfer case, just a slip yoke type deal. We brought the shaft back to town and he's having a new U joint installed, then back to the woods tomorrow to pop it in and come home (assuming the POS hasn't been set on fire by drunken teenagers). It shouldn't matter, but if for some reason we can't get the shaft installed, can we drive it without the shaft installed?
