Hi all,

I read somewhere that there are 9" front diffs on certain Landcruisers. Wouldn't be surprised if I was mistaken though.

I know there is a 9" rear diff on many models (anyone know which ones, or where I can find a list?).

Really just trying to find out if there is a bigger/stronger front diff out there from Toyota other than the regular 8" or IFS 7.5"...Not too interested in a Ford 9"...

Some call a cruiser diff a 9"

the ring gear is something like 8.75 to 9.5 depending on who you ask.

LC axles are going to be the strongest front axle's toyota made, maybe a 80series but they use a smaller mini truck ring gear.

If you want the best in toyota front, call these guys Diamond Axles - Front/Steering Axles

What is the problem your having with a 60 front axle?

What does that front diamond axle cost?

Yeah that's the housing I'm planning on using, pricey, but "buy once cry once".

I'm more concerned with moving parts though. I guess the HP diff is the strongest Toy front diff?

As for Ford, you can laugh/mock all you want, but I just want to keep it Toyota.

One day in the future, I'll probably do a domestic build, and then I'll keep it all Ford or whatever.

Yeah the HP is a great diff..but the LC 9.5 rear diff is fairly strong from what I hear...I am trying to figure out right now if they make that rear diff in HP...hmmm...

The plan for mine this fall is:
FZJ80 axle housings
HP Diffs - Factory lockers..??..w/ 37's...any insite...or ARB's..I know ARB's will be strong...ha!.
Longfields

However I like the axle housing you are planning on using...very nice.

A high pinion FJ80 Front is not the strongest they make.

stay LC or do a hybrid tundra

and a ford 9" is pound for pound the strongest axle ever made.

I have seen a Ford 9" diff made into a front axle assembly on a Jeep once. That's why I always liked Land Cruisers; the hardware is stout enough for serious abuse and major increases in engine size as well as tire size with minimal upgrades. I'm in the process of building a front axle assembly and I'm keeping the 60's basic architecture and drop out, I'm just stretching the housing a total of six inches. And why not? I already have the right gear ratio and Longfields, now I'll have a custom housing and even stronger shafts than before.

Sunray Engineering in TX made what they called a 609. 60 knuckles and outers on a Ford 9" nodular housing. Pretty trick.

no, a 10.25 tundra rear housing being used to build a front axle.

Man I didn't know people were doing that...do you have a link to any build threads? You're talking about this one right?

2007 Toyota Tundra Rear Axle - 4Wheel & Off-Road Magazine

It just came out. But man, that would be beef!

Is it still strong enough on coast side too?

I know people tried using a rear Landcruiser diff in the front and they just broke because you're putting too much load on the wrong side of the ring gear...

Out of curiosity, how many people are blowing R &P's? Don't birfs (even with Longs) and knuckles let got first?

For real? People using a rear Cruiser diff inthe front end?????

Odd.... there are thousands and thousands of people running this mod... because it is not a mod... stock configuration on every Cruiser until the '80 series.

And any damage to them from excessive loading is.... rare so as to be almost unheard of.... axle shafts and birfields sure... but diffs? Sure, it can happen.... but kinda like asteroid strikes.... don't hold your breath in fear for it

If you are running enough power to be breaking this unit.... then you are over stressing a LOT of other components too. What sort of rig are you building and what sort of power/tires/usage are you planning?

Mark...

I wasn't talking stregnth..just saying it was a good diff...still strong...yeah there are stronger...

Doesn't answer the HP Rear...do you or anyone know if someone makes this for the FZJ80 axle?

I'm with you on this one Mark...I ran my 40 this way for years before changing gears...my rear diff was my origional front...;)

There was a Cruiser shop in Salt Lake City for a while under the name of DJ's Traction Systems. He made Cruisers of all varieties. I remember him telling me that after-market, chromoly shafts would fail before the diff gears would.
