Hey all, Im new here & to Cruisers. I just got an 88 FJ62, tinkered on it for a week or so & have it running & driving good.

The only issue left, is when you leave from a stop, it'll take off nice, but shifts into second gear waaaay to soon. Im used to Ford & GM where theres a vacum modulator, or detent cable to play with .

Is there any external adjustment I can make to raise the shift point, or something to check?

If not am I down to taking out the valve body & cleaning, & cross my fingers?

Other then that, I love this thing & can tell itll be a keeper.

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff: It's Rodney here from Wholesale Automatics. The kick down cable is also the pressure control cable for the transmission. Lock at the kick down cable and see if you have a small crushed collet on the inner cable, you will need to slide the orange rubber boot down the cable so you can see what you are doing. set you gap at 1/8 between the tip of the outer cable and the collet. This varies from factory specs from car to car but as a guide 1/16 min and 1/4 max. I set them in-between these to measurements taking driving style and transmission characteristics into consideration. 1/8 is a good all-round setting to start from. If you have no joy from this then we need to find out if you have the same shift points at light and heavy throttle, they should be a massive difference but if there no difference then we have a stuck valve. Try this and get back to me and I will continue.

Thanks Rodney,
I'll go look tomm night & make sure its in the ball park. I did play with the cable a bit to see if it did anything different, I tightened it a bit, & it did downshift faster with les throttle when driving in the higher gears, but as far as the starting from a stop, it still went from first to second in about 20 feet, light throttle, or mashed to the floor from a stop.

Ive done valve bodys on C-4's plenty when getting trans's that sat for a while & didnt behave, freed up the stuck valves & cleaned, shift kits, etc.

If I open the toyota trans, is it about the same deal? Or do I need to know what Im doing first?

Thank you sooo much for the reply by the way, these forums are great.

Jeff
