Hi, For the past 8 years I've drive diesels and haven't worked on a gasser since the last Toyota I owned and rebuilt. So I am a little rusty with the 22R's carburator and annoying vacuum system.
Now this is an 1987 Toyota 4x4 pickup, but the history on the motor is questionable as I am sure it came off something else but it is a late 80's Canadian 22R for sure. It's a 5 speed also.
I just rebuilt the head (it was running on antifreeze - great fuel economy), valves, and all. Lined up the timing marks for TDC on 1st cylinder and 12 o'clock on the camshaft and sprocket, reassembled everything and after setting timing (1* TDC at 950RPM with hoses disconnected from distributor at normal operating temps, as per the sticker on the hood - which could have come from another vehicle), it runs smooth but idles fast (1100-1200RPM).
With the hoses disconnected from the distributor it actually idles at 700RPM (where it should normally). With them connected it sits around 1100-1200 unless I force the throttle cable bracket down a bit (away from acceleration) then it drops in RPM to around 800. As soon as I throttle up it goes back to 1200RPM at idle.
When I am driving, it idles high also, when changing gears it's staying around 1500RPM and when I come to a stop and am in neutral it slowly drops down to around 1100-1200. It seems like the kick down for the RPM is sticking somewhere.
It never did that before - but then again it also ran on antifreeze before and I had questioned its idle speed and and timing to begin with (which originally was advanced and sitting at around 10* TDC).
I did not touch the carburator or the linkage at it, I simply removed the intake and carb all in one piece. I may have jarred something while moving it around from spot to spot, I did place it on its side to drain degreaser out of the intake while cleaning but that's it. I've tried adjusting the idle screw but it seems to do nothing for decreasing the idle speed and the linkage has not changed in legth. and when I give it some slack it also does not affect the speed.
I am speculating I may have crossed a couple of the endless and useless vacuum hoses that are in here but am not sure (I thought I kept track pretty well), the Hanes manual is a pathetic joke and wouldn't even be useful as toilet paper.
So, has anyone encountered this and knows what I'm talking about or has a schematic of the vacuum hoses and the carburator. I seem to have one very small piece of linkage right beside where the throttle cable connects that is just sitting there not connected. Like I said, the origins of this engine are a mystery and I have no clue who has pissed around with it, so I am assuming everything is incorrect. I can post photos if it helps.
Keep in mind - I've worked on diesels for the past 8 years and am rusty with gasser terms - so write slowly
Thanks for the help!
