I just pulled the tcase and transmission outta my 87 60 (stock 4spd). It was leaking from the transmission to the tcase, and was supposed to have been recently rebuilt. Well, the seal between the two is not completely seating in sealing area. Anyway during the teardown I realized that the tcase is missing the bolt in the pic below. Is this bolt absolutely necessary to stop the transmission oil from flowing into the tcase? If so, can I get it from the dealer, or do I need to start hunting in Mud?

Dealer may have th bolt and you could try fastenal or some other suppliers. I have tapped the tranny to accept a standard size grade 8 before but it would be better to get the correct bolt.

Depending on your trans that bolt may not be needed. On a 5 speed (H55) that hole is plugged. Check your trans and make sure there is a place for the bolt to go if there is then put one there.

Doh!!!:o I just saw you said 4 speed. Never Mind

the bolt is necessary... also oil can enter to the transfer case via a defective front idler shaft o-ring seal.......

I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up! My input shaft seal is raised approx. 1/4" on one side, flippin' repair shop that the PO used!

Hey, that T-Case looks famimilar.. wait that's my workbench .. whatcha doin' with my wrench there ???

Just kidding... I am glad the photo helped

BTW, If you have an H55F the bolt is needed, the 4 speed has a bolt that goes there anyway.

There is a bolt there stock with a 4 speed. I assume this is not a picture of your truck, since the bolt shown is SAE. ANyway, if you have a stock 87 4speed, you need the bolt that goes there, as it helps to hold the tranny to the t-case.

Thanks for the pic, it was easier to find than going and taking one.

Does anyone know if missing this bolt will contribute to the fluid exchange between transmission and tcase? It seems logical to me, but I haven't taken a 4spd apart either.

OK... If you have a 4 speed there "should" be a spot in the tranny housing to accept a bolt on the t-case side, thus you should not be missing a bolt and if you are you need to put one there.

If you have a 5-speed as "my photo" would show.. then you need to plug the hole in order to prevent oil transer between the t-case and tranny.

The photo that is shown is from my post on converting from a 4 speed to 5 speed so you will get an answer one way or the other depending on what you have.

If you happen to be upgrading to a 5 speed here is an informative link that I used and may help you.

Also, while you have the thing apart go buy a T-case retofit kit from SOR or MAN-A-Fre or others and that will have all the bearings and gaskets to do a nice rebuild. You should get or have access to a press to remove the bearings too. It is not that hard to do but is it hard work.

Thanks for the input. I am staying 4spd, and there is a spot in the transmission for the bolt. Just ordered one, along with a bunch of other stuff, from Toyota. All the bearings and shafts look good, like they were replaced just 2 years ago (PO has receipts from previous rebuild, guess they left the bolt out...), so I should only need gaskets and seals...

Thanks again!

If that bolt was left out, there would be direct access for oil from the tcase to the tranny. Good thing you tore it down to look, as there are lots of surprises in these old trucks.

Have you tried the hose fix

Run a hose from Fill plug on trans. to fill plug on transfer X. SOR sells them $$$ or get your own fittings I did this to an FJ40 and it stopped the transfer or help even them out all of the time.

OK, new question, I got my new gasket that goes between the transmission and tcase from my local Toyota dealer. It is missing the part that goes over the reinforcement crossbar. The previous gasket didn't have have it either. Should I try to get better gasket or should I just put some black silicone there. I'm talking about the "crossbar" highlighted in the pic below. Any ideas?

Anyone got any ideas on the gasket? The FSM isn't helping much... Going to be putting this thing back together tomorrow, so any help would be appreciated.

You need that gasket with the cross piece. The Gasket without the cross piece is for the H55 which does not use it. In fact, when I installed my H55, I had to cut the cross piece out of the gasket.

Good luck, call Cruiserdan.

A little RTV silicone and you'll be good to go. I will look at my gasket collection and see if I have one with a cross bar.
