Hey folks,

About to pick up an out of state 4Runner from Wisconsin and I wanted to know if there were any differences especially in the emissions(smog) specs?

Does anyone know if the 4Runner was imported to the US with just one set of specs?

Meaning did CA have the vehicles wired differently from all the other states?

Did the 4Runners come with some kind of OBDII sensor that minimizes smog?

This needs to be done right to avoid any complications with the law. If anyone in here has any tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

If all the smog eqiup that came on the rig is still on it, it will be legal. It does not have to be a Cal spec rig. I have bought "49 state vehicles" and they passed Calif. smog. But all the original stuff was on them. It's a gamble though. If it does not pass you are out of luck, whereas in Calif it is technically up to the seller to have the test done and provide the certificate. Then if it does not pass you just don't buy it. When you buy it out of state and bring it in there is no taking it back, you get to do all the repairs required to make it pass.

A lot of Wisconsin trucks are going to have some rust issues, and if you have never dealt with serious rust, it is a real pita. I personally would not buy a "rust belt" vehicle. Calif is one of the best states to buy used cars, it may cost more but imho it is worth it. The central valley is a great environment for used cars.
Good luck.

This truck is worth it. It's been taken apart, rustproofed, engine fully rebuilt, painted in original factory white, SAS conversion upfront and 36" tires on 15x8 black steelies. The guy who sold it to me has all the receipts to prove all the work was done professionally. All its missing is a catalytic converter, but everything else is there.

Thank you for answering my question. I'm headed up to Wisconsin on Tuesday to drive it back here to CA.

That does sound like a nice truck. Man that is a long drive in winter. Hope you can have some fun while you're at it!

Yeah, I'm definitely going to have some fun. I'll shoot pics when I come back.
