I just bought an 85 asian carb for my 79 2f motor and i saw in the cruiser facts on this site that only 79 - 80 carbs are interchangable. Now i'm thinking that is the smog equipment that came for that year?? Where I live there are no smog laws and my engine is already desmogged as is. So will there be any hang ups if it does not deal with smog?

I can't say for sure but my gut feeling is the 85 carb will work. As the 85 is off a fj60 which I'm sure had AC, it will have the AC idler up diaprham, you can not use this but you cann use it to bump up the RPM's say when winching, you would just get a vaccum switch off of say a fj60(it;s mounted on the washer pump) hook it up the the diapragm on the carb, other end to a vacuum souce, hook up a switch to the wires on the vacumm switch, so you just hit the in cab switch and it will bump up the RPM to what ever you set it at, pretty slick IMOP.

or it might be that the 85 carb will not work on a 79, but I recall even if it's not the same all 2 barel carbs will physiclly swap, not sure on the hoses ect, but the linkage and mount are the same.

Does it matter that my engine is from 79 the first year they started having a/c and power steering on 2f's??

I put a 79 on a 75. It was not a direct hook up. I had to bring it to my mechanic to complete the hook up. In my case the 75 did not provide all of the hook ups the 79 needed for power and or vacuum. So my mechanic had to "come up with sources" for the vacuum and power. IT works fine and I am happy with the results. Review and compare the emmision diagrams in the shop manuals of the 79 and 85 and look for your hook ups.
Mine had to have smog hooked up to it so yours may be easier.
If it does not lookmlike it will work you may be able to use your 85 carb as barter for a 79 with one of the carb specialist.
Good Luck.

i tried to to this about two years ago and could not make it work.can't remeber exactly why but remeber it wouldn't work. mtcw
