I have a BJ70 I've been restoring for over a year. I'll post a full set of pics later. For now, I'll start by telling you I bought this vehicle under the impression it had an overhauled engine (my bad for not doing better research). Once we got the rig structural issues taken care of, repaired all rust spots on the body and frame, POR 15'ed the whole underside including inside and out of the frame, new OME suspension, 33" Mickey Thompson's and Dick Cepeck wheels....Thanks 4wheelauto.com.....new interior, setas and all, painted the rig Adriatic Blue Metallic (2003 Range Rover color). Now the fun begins.........

The engine was in poor shape. The head was crack in all cylinders between the valves.......new Toyota head from 4wheel.......thought about going alternate using a head made in Maylasia.....decided not to take the risk.....also new Toyota head gasket......thanks.........Jake2far...........added a turbo kit...thanks again jake2far........advanced the timing to 14-15 BTDC, jacked up the pop-off pressure on the injectors to 50PSI over the top range spec....Thanks again jake2far.........This made a world of difference! Of course I've added a boost gauge, EGT, water temp and oil pressure gauge.....They are actually 2 two inch dual gauges from Westach...really cool.
This truck, even with the 33's runs excellent!

Anyone wanting more info send m a message to randy693riggs@verizon.net.

More to follow later.

pic explanation

top pic is at the start, bottom is close to what it looks like today. Notice the 3" fender flares from JC whitney ($80) and custom made diamond plate mud flaps. I couldn't find anything that fit well and looked good so I made these myself.

I'm gonna try and upload some pics.

How did you install the black extended mud flaps under the wheel arches and what material?

I don't want to use screws or bolts that may involve drilling holes....or try to avoide if possible.

Missed this post.

How are those 3" fender flares held on?

Any url for that JC whitney?

more pics and data

I hope to get more pics up. Anyway, I just my rig back from the diesel mechanic. They set the injection pump timing to 14 BTDC. It was retarded 4 degrees causing the engine to heat up and egt's to be about 100 degrees high. I've since added 1/2 turn on the HAC to add fuel and the engine runs fantastic. Also, the increase in the injector pop off pressure to 50 PSI above the max spec, really makes a difference.

Very clean job. Well done its looking sweet.

More pics and details

btw, I had the mechanic check the compression after install of the new toyota head and OEM headgasket.......390-400 in each cylinder which I think is pretty good. I also forgot to tell everyone I installed a cooling system modification provided to me by jake2far. Basically this mod installs a second line (5/8" I think) coming off the front of the engine with a thermostat in the line that opens 5 degrees later than the main one. This gives added cooling when needed.

If the pics load, they show the rust we found when we pulled the windshield. The entire bottom lip was gone! We had to fabricate a 1/8" piece of carbon steel into the area, pull the dash back and weld it into place. With some minor grinding afterwards, the new windshield went into place very well. No Leaks!

body mount repair pics

we found that the body mount "cups" where the upper rubber body mounts sit, were mostly rusted out after 25 years. Since we couldn't find replacements, we made them out of a stainless steel by cuuting slices out of the tube and welding SS washers on the bottom. We then welded them in place and POR 15'ed the whole thing.
As you can see, we lifted the body off the frame with come alongs mounted on the front and back. The truck is much quieter now because of this (and the dynamat extreme we covered the entire inside tray with).

you need a "star" to upload photos properly. (ie. contribute).

This is a really impressive build up, and makes me actually hopeful of my attempt on the rebuild 70 now.

Great post and pictures guys. Hats-off to your hard work. Is POR 15 an anti rust product?

POR 15 is an anti rust product that works great. It's a three step process.....degreaser, surface prep (with Metal Ready), thren you paint or spray on the POR 15. Don't get it on your skin, it'll have to wear off.

Is this BJ70 was bought from jsaltlick ?

This truck come from my area.

Yes, I believe so. John C..... was his name from MA. I bought it last August, started the resto in September, now here's what I have after a s***load of work and $$.

Still to come.....adding a custom bullbar to the front, moving the lights from top to front, ladder on rear, air horn, CB radio with PA, propane injection, second skin the entire underside for sound and protection, putting the winch on a rack for portability (front or back), trailer brakes, nice stereo.

Pics to follow....
