Got fed up with just 1 rear break and finally got around to fixing my leaky rear hub. After removing the axle I immediately noticed the outer seal was not flush with the spindle. After replacing seals I followed FSM procedure to reinstall the hub and axle. I got preload to 8lbs after tightening the locking bot to 43 lbs. axle installed fine. Got the axle within a 8th of an inch from flush from the hub then finished pulling them together with 25lbs torque on each of the 6 hub bolts. After torquing those to spec the hub no longer spins. I tried putting the wheel on to see if I could get it to move but nothing.

The hub spun and I could see main axle spin prior to tightening down the hub bolts. Any advice is most welcome.

The axle should easily slip all the way in, if you had to force it in by tightening the axle studs then it must be jamming on something. Perhaps the seal has been dragged in on the shaft and is jamming it? Or the outer part of the wheel bearing locknut is jamming against the back face of the axle?

Did you replace this little seal too?

The lip if that seal runs on the raised axle-surface just behind the axle flange. So if you had to force the flange the last little bit up to the hub, odds are that this seal was getting munted/ruined in the process (because that's the only thing I can think of that should be able to offer this resistance .... and perhaps you fitted one that was the wrong size?)

Just a thought.

PS. Correct wheelbearing adjustment is a job that requires quite a bit of skill I reckon so be careful there

Haha. I had to laugh, I haven't heard that word in over 10 years. Sorry for the hijack.

Danny (aka pngunne) has gotten me into the habit of slipping in the odd bit of "down-under slang".

:D

An update for others who may undertake this job. I ended up pulling the hub and reseating the bearing races and inner oil seal which corrected the issue. Here are some pix with and without paint.
