80 Whistles... why?!

They all make the noise due to design of exhaust - it's normal.

Check your advanced search function under "exhaust whistle' and 80 series threads and you will see several long discussions about it.

I've wondered about the whistle too. My 96' had a faint exhaust whistle and for some odd reason I decided to remove the tail resonator. The thing had contacted some rocks and was a bit beat up. The exhaust definitely whistles now although its not as annoying as it was several months ago. What's different in the exhaust resonance from a 2F? You can throw any old exhaust on a 2F and it never whistles. On a 1FZ it seems really touchy - has to be just the right setup not to whistle. And what's with the intake resonator tucked in the front fender? Does the truck breath better with it in place? Is it just to knock down some noise?

I got rid of mine by putting on a Cherrybomb glasspack...

Rumbles like a dream :D

yeah they all do it, X2 on it sounding a little bit like the cool guys with the turbos...one can dream:frown:

Mine does it, I tell them its the turbo that comes on when I hit the PWR button.

interestingly, I just replaced my blown/rusted our stock exhaust (muffler and tailpipe parts specifically) with brand new OEM parts from Cdan and that whistle has gone away completely.

but I still can't tell you what causes it...

Try the gasket between the cats. That's where mine comes from. The mechanic found it and asked if I wanted it fixed. I verified. Yup, that's it. I told him I liked it like that.

In case you missed it, 80s whistle, unless you drive like a :princess:.

I disagree - Mine has never whistled in 15 years and it hasn't been driven like a :princess: either, so don't go there!

Is the tip of the exhaust bent or has it been cut off? That little notch on the bottom of the end of the exhaust pipe has a purpose - to eliminate (and it sounds like for some of you) mitigate whistling.

Hanna used to (don't know if he still does) cut the very end off for the install of his rear bumper and that caused a whistle to occur.

You are an unusual case, my friend, both of mine whistled. Any of the 80s I've been around with stock exhaust do the same.

Interesting. Reading the thread, I was surprised at the number of whistling trucks, given my experience. My truck must just be special! :D
