OK guys, here is your chance to convert me!!

I currently have a 40 and a 60. I looked at the budget to get both of them going (the 40 for me, the 60 for taking the family) and realized I could get an FJ 80 for the same amount. Note I wrote FJ, no Z in there. Future plans involve manual tranny, which is cheaper for the 3FE.

So the question is: 80 vs 40. 80 vs 60 the 80 wins. I run brushy logging trails, but don't woory about scratches.

Let the opinions fly!!

keep what you have early 80s aren't all that with no lockers.

Never owned an early 80 series but have had a 40, 60 and FZJ80. Since you did mention a family I’d have to say the FJ80 makes the most sense. Coil springs for family comfort, rear shoulder belts for family safety, less prone to rust and rear sliding windows for the family dog if applicable, also it cheaper to insure one vehicle than two. IMO the 80, even without lockers, is easier to wheel than the 60.

On the other hand, if you never mentioned family I’d say fix the 40 & 60.

Look around for a loaded FZJ80. You won't be sorry. I sold my FJ60, and bought an '95 FZJ80. Cost me 2x what I sold my 60 for, but well worth it. Sell 'em both :) and get an 80. Wheels better, more comfort, more power, lockers, lifted, winched, etc. You'll dump way more $ into an FJ80 trying to make it capable than just buying a locked FZJ80. It may take a few months to find.

And, why the insistence on a manual tranny? The 80 is the first auto tranny 4WD I've had, and other than a dead battery, I have no complaints. Dual batteries will take care of that worry. If you're not rock crawling, then I don't see the justification for putting a manual tranny behind the 3FE (or the 1FZFE for that matter).

Buy the 80, sell the 60, strip down the 40 and use it to wheel.

Devin on the Norcal list is selling a solid FJ80 for a good price- (baby on the way) if you are in the market, you might want to jump on that.

I should mention that my long term plans for the 80 include an H41 and Orion (with twin stick!) and Aussies in both ends.

I know in stock form the FZJ rocks, but it is outside the CURRENT budget. If I start making some real money, i may go that route.

No Z in there No go. :flipoff2:

Build the 40 up. :D

I still don't get it. Maybe it would help to know what you're budget it. If $5K is your max, and your looking for a high miles, trashed '91, then that's one thing. But you need to line-item out all the future mods you'd have to make to get it up to capability of an FZJ. I still don't get the manual tranny and orion conversion for logging trails.

And what about the '97 in your sig line?

What Jessie said, you'd be way ahead to build the 40 than you would be to try and build a 3fe 80.

Money goes a lot further on 40's than it does on 80's.

I guess I should mention that the logging trails are peppered with good sized rocks, so speed kills.

I suppose I had 80 envy going. I'll probably fix what I have.

As for the 97, it's currently a mall cruiser. However, in a few years.....
