Have there been any live tech seminars done in so cal on an actual truck as a demo for guys to watch and learn?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of simple tuning things that an average guy can do, but have a master tech involved to supervise and watch and give pointers.

I'd love to get my throttle cable adjusted correctly, check for a bad PHH, get rid of tons of electrical gremlins and see how guys measure for CC bushings and what dual battery setups are best as well as tons of other things like LSPV valves, and caliper rebuilding, and coolant flushes.

Before you flame me, yes, I know that's what this site is for, and I'm very glad it's here, but what I'm suggesting is an actual meet and wrench kind of event, possibly with the guru's of this site and some industry pro's that would lend a proffesionalism and accountability to such an event.

Some might say, ask your local club, read a FSM, go to more runs....sure that's all fine and dandy. But I'm wondering if there's any support out there for such an event.

It's not like I can hang out at Slee all day with my video camera for a half a year, but if we were to meet up at say, Moab for a tech day, er sumthin like it....interested? 2007 Pimp my 80?

of course I'd love for it to be my truck, in my driveway...:flipoff2:

ideas? any such events planned at any of the vendors?
 
Local TLCA clubs can help you there, Every year we doa wheel packing party and a real mecahnics garage. Some people do bearing, some do other things. Anything is open and we help each other
 
I'm all for it. Let's do a big get together at your place if you're gonna cook! :)

I've done some of these things. I still need to do the PHH and the Birfs. Anybody for a Birf party?

A "birfday" party? Can we get a jump house?

Seriously, I like the idea. I would love to have some help knocking out some of the preventative maintenance I've been putting off. Ventura is a trek for me, but if there's enough interest, I'll make the trip. Or maybe we can find a more central location to do this, like Canyon Lake.:flipoff2:

Biff, are you still "available for parties"?

a good Birfday party IMHO consists of somebody doing the birfs and everybody else drinking :beer: , watching, and yelling funny comments.... ooooooh....

Nope not available for paties, I've retired from that business. :D

If you guys are serious I'm good for a birf party. A central location would be perfect for a good birf party, with enough people we could probably knock out two or three jobs. The only compensation I require is a six pack of Sam Adams Winter blend:D
 
Birf job is forthcoming in the Adams household. I figure I'd wait until I hit 180K on the odometer - about a year or less. That's about the time the front rotors will be ready for replacement (based on when the original front rotors were replaced) anyway and then just get done/or do the whole thing.

I DO NOT have the skill for this one and will not tackle it by myself. I don't mind doing the dirty grunt work, so long is there is someone there that's done it and knows what the hell they are doing! They can sit back with the six pack and instruct.
 
I understand that TLCS groups and clubs do this on occasion, but what I'm looking for is an actual full day, or weekend thing where I can learn from an actual certified mechanic, or accreditied shop that has experience in all of these items.

If it takes getting a tech to go to the SoCal TLCA meeting, then cool.

Not that I don't trust the guys to know what works, it's just that I've gone to some "landcruiser specialists" here in So Cal, only to find out after they charged me labor rates and fees that they didn't fix the issue, and then admitted they dont do 80's once I pressed them for details.

I want to wrench my own truck, I'm capable of reading and following threads, and FSM diagrams, but there are some things I just would like to get a seasoned pro's outlook on as I'm digging into it. Like the EGR, and Fuel systems, ECU issues, and anything electrical.

I think it would be cool to have a Tech day at a local event. Have the top ten items to be discussed, taught, demo'd , wahtever, and have guys come with their parts and do it with guidance.

I work 60 hours a week and my rig is a DD. I don't have the time to tear it down and leave it sit while I go get parts on Monday. I gotta know what I'm getting into before I start. So my policy is read and search, then research, and that's when I feel like I could get 85% of the job complete on my own, but then if the unexpected happens, I'm not getting to work on Monday morning.

If I saw someone do it, then I can tackle it. Less surprises.
 
Paul, I'm sure we can do a great event with very knowledgeable MUD people, perhaps more so on some of this stuff than your typical certified pro mechanic. Not to mention that it is unlikely that you'll find a certified pro or a business willing to volunteer their time for a six pack and good company :)

miller is closed cuz of the 'day fire' we will be going somewhere for the 3rd YLCOCM run in december

Count me in for a birf party also. I am looking to changing my rotors on the front pretty soon so might as well get both done on the LX. The 93' needs a birf job too:mad: . But it is the red headed step child of the two so we will see how long it takes to get one. I know it is a long process and Sundays/Mondays are good for me. We will all need enough advance notice thought o get the supplies from CDan shipped.

I am drinking an ice cold Sam Adams winter brew as I type this;)
