Folks around here lock the hubs on their part time 4wds in October or November and unlock them in march. I've been doing that for 30 years and it causes zero problems. Lets you pop in and out of 4wd on the fly so that you never have to drive on drive pavement in 4wd but eliminates the need to stop to climb out and lock hubs several times a day when you leave the dry pavement and hit the ice/packed snow.
