on 285s I used to go to about 400kms and have a little less than a quarter of the sub-tank left but close to nothing in the main tank!

They run fine on regular gas, plenty of those in Ecuador too, regular here is 80 and premium is 87.

I tried to run regular on my 1FZFE and it started knocking pretty badly.

run the same regular gas on a carbureted and it did fine.

Dang, premium = 87 and regular = 80?
If you guys have such bad gas, why not contemplate diesel vehicles?

Funny thing is there are plenty of these locally, no sunroof no awd, no MAF, no lockers, no auto tranny, no power seats and I wanted all of this so I have to wait untill I found a US version vx for sale.

Local cruisers come with dual air, manual tranny, manual locking hubs, dual tanks, rear tire carrier, front winch (very rare), 4 square front lamps. cloth seats. not all cruisers came with all this goodies some had less goodies than others.

also I wanted to be able to use all the accumulated knowledge of this great forum so I decided for the US version.

I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...

If you think our gas is bad you should see our diesel, a friend of mine is a service manager for one of Hyundai dealerships, he told me that the sulfur content on our diesel is so high that whatever money I save on gas will be lost in the maintenance cost of the diesel engine.

Maybe this is only for the new diesel generation but in any case you can see all the diesel vehicles new and old smoking pretty badly.

Hello,

I have a '93 Land Cruiser with a carb, manual hubs and 5-speed. (in Cambodia). I just got done getting a rebuilt limited-slip rearend from America, because this was a base model without one. (importing was a nightmare!) What I need to know is what is the model of the Carb? Was this carb used in any other trucks/cars? Where can I get a carb and/or rebuild kit. I've been quoted almost $800. for a carb plus shipping. This seems a bit much.

I know Venezuela used to have carbed 1FZ around 92 up to 96 IIRC .. dunno if they still have parts for those but shipping ain't gonna be cheap ..

You better check Australia ( dunno if they ever seen carb 1FZ ) or Jap ..

That's a very good price actually. The 2F carb was well north of $900 when it was available from Toyota.

LOL I don't get it. Us spoiled rich Americans don't get rear air and a center console fridge, yet the least likely countries you'd think would want/afford such 'luxuries' such as those in S. America do?

Seems logical.

Why would a carb'd 1FZ be a bad idea?

Seems an easy way to swap and it doesn't appear there are many performance gains, from a numerical standpoint, between the two FZ variations, plus no ECUs.

^its probably less efficient

seems like a very sophisticated engine to get a carb

Saying the 1FZ is a sophisticated engine is giving it way too much credit. Even against the other Toyota engines of its time it was the least technologically advanced.

The carb was used because of fuel quality, cost of manufacturing (price of wiring/ecu/sensors/etc. vs price of carb) and ease of service in remote areas.

Seems to me a carb'd version would make for an easier swap into a vintage Cruiser, if planning an H151 and HF1A.

That said, the general market 80s, up to '97, have substantially less electronics for the 5 speed, manually selected part time case.

There's an added EFI is the extent of anything I can see, between the 1FZ-FE and 1FZ-F.

If possible to source, potentially could make for easier swaps.

I'd run the 1FZ-F, for that matter.

Actually, the 94 that I just bought here in Costa Rica (Central America) is carb'd with a 5 speed, manual hubs, and has an extra OEM tank and gauge, along with an altimeter that I have no idea how it works. The vehicle was purchased new here by the prior owner at the Toyota dealer in San Jose, Costa Rica. Gas here in Costa Rica is over $6.00 a gallon, and diesel is considerably cheaper. Venezuela is where they practically give fuel to the locals. The folks here really love their diesels and, if given that choice, will always opt for diesel. Also, the gasoline here is crap, ethanol at its best, or should I say worst. You have to run premium. Our other car is a Subaru that I brought from the States. It never has had a check engine light since new.............till now in CR. Put in a new oxygen sensor, reset the code, and it went about 300 miles before it came back on. I'm going to buy a code reader and just start resetting it every time it goes off. Also, can anyone lead me to where I might find some instructions on how to use the OEM altimeter? And for those non-US folks with the same engine and 5 speed tranny as mine, does your owners manual cover a five speed or a carb'd engine? Mine, although like new, only covers fuel injection and automatic transmission.

I didn't realize you had manual locking hubs. That's cool. It will be interesting to hear how often you need them.
In regards to your Subaru, it sounds like the gas down there is basically E85 or worse. If the engine isn't tuned to run high-ethanol gas, it will have troubles. Maybe check into some other forums and see if anyone has converted one to run on high-ethanol gas.
I know in the Toyota Dual-Fuel(Regular and e-85) there is an alcohol sensor that tells the fuel map what to do based on alcohol content in the fuel. I don't really know much on Subaru, so good luck with that.

How are your prices on CNG or LPG? maybe you could convert your truck to run on those instead? It is really easy with a carburetor.
I really want to learn more about this engine. I'll have to see what information I can dig up.

Golgo12, the gasoline here is truly abysmal, but folks just seem to respond to it by running premium. Evidently, even though Costa Rica is a third world country, they are very concerned about their environmental foot print and embarked on an aggressive multi-year campaign to increase the ethanol content in fuel used. The gent I bought the 94 from has run premium since the day it was picked up at the Toyota dealer. I just had a propane BBQ built on the patio and expected to pay similar prices for propane as I pay for gasoline. To my pleasant surprise, I filled two new propane tanks for about $20 total; I think that might be comparable to the States, maybe even less. The bad news is that the two tanks at Price Smart, a Costco wanna-be, cost $42 each. Propane is not practical to use in a vehicle because they don't have an easy to use infrastructure in which to fill up. Diesel is the fuel of choice here, and it's cheaper.

Delancy, I would love to have whatever you can forward.

Thanks to you both for your help. By the way, I have a vintage Boston Whaler in the garage back in the States. If you know anything about the Whaler community, you know they have a killer website with the most helpful membership I've ever encountered. I'm finding IH8MUD to very similar. Thank goodness since I'm new to Land Cruisers.

Might only have a hardcopy, when I considered a carb'd 1FZ-F swap into a Pig.....but opted to REALLY do it up and build an early 2F/late 2F, 3F, and 3FE....for simplicity sake, instead.

Be a before I can check the laptop, but can download for a few bucks from any of the websites that offer.
