Hey guys. This is my first post so I guess that would make me a newbie. Anyway, I could use some help diagnosing a grinding noise I am having with my 80. When I am coming to a stop and I have let off the accelerator, there is a loud grinding noise that vibrates the entire truck. It doesn't do it all of the time. I am also hearing a clunking noise when I go over a speed bump with my rear wheels. In addition, when the grinding noise occurs, I can feel it slowing my truck down, like there is some resistance. It usually doesn't last long although it has been progressively getting worse and lasting longer. Also, it goes away when I reapply the accelerator. I cannot tell exactly where it is coming from. Any ideas????? It's driving me crazy.

Bad output bearing. If it is the front output bearing, plan on pulling the entire xfer case. If it is the rear one, you can get to the output bearing by pulling the rear extension housing.

This is a good time to change your seals both front and rear and the bearings.

welcome Searay!

Wish I could help. No experience in that particular area. Have you downloaded the Field Service Manual?

is it a howling sound at times when you come upon an irregular surface and you step on the brakes and then they shudder and the wheel starts going to the left and right and then it kicks back to normal. i have the same problem. maybe we should record the noise with those portable recorders. let me know.

where do I get a field service manuel?

ulikepoi--no, mine does not do that. my problem is a definite grinding coming from the center of the truck. It is not related to braking and my steering is not affected. I am not sure what is going on with yours. Are you sure that you don't have a caliper sticking?

seray76...your problem sounds just like a noise that's been getting worse in my 96. A few here suggested (and I hoped) that it would be a u-joint, but I pulled both driveshafts and the noise was still there, confirming that it was in the t-case. My sound I would describe as a faint grinding, and it is only present when NOT on the accelerator. It seems loudest at around 15 to 20 MPH. At highway speeds I do not hear it.

My plan is the same as yours...get a used t-case and swap it. Then tear down the old one and replace the seals and bearings and keep it for a spare.

Pair_of_Eees, my problem sounds like EXACTLY what you are experiencing. Good luck with finding one. A buddy of mine in Utah just sold a T/C for less than 200.00 (shipping included). I was just a couple of weeks too late. Sucks to be me.
