Dearest Experts on the 80-Series,
I have a pondering in my mind that I'd like for ya'll to condemn or condone.
We know that the 80 series is an AWD with a differential in the transfer case, correct? The diff lock is used to send a 50/50 split front to rear, correct?
If one were to replace the front drive flanges with mini-truck locking hubs in an effort to reduce wear on the front end components and maybe save a little gas, one would need to keep the center diff lock engaged in order to move, correct? Would this be ill-advised to do on a regular basis, say a daily commute?
I'm thinking there has to be a reason more people don't do this in order to save some wear-and-tear and gas. What am I missing?

It adds wear and tear in the configuration you describe. I've done this BTW, alot of times. The reason it adds wear is because everything is still turning, in addition to now your birfs are truning at a rate non-consistent with the hub (added wear). Nor does it save on gas.
it's cool. Feels like a completely different animal, not better not worse, different. squats on take-off too!
The best thing to do if you try this is exactly what you mention but also drop the front drive shaft, that way neither dif nor the birfs are turning. that would be equal to your Taco.

So this is more of a trail rig mod?
A silly one if it is. manny hubs are weaker than flanges. On the trail, the hubs are locked in 99.99% of the time.... run flanges.
If you're going to run manny hubs, buy the P/T kit. I have manny hubs because I thought I'd need them for the front Aussie, but don't. I have played around with them recently and with a friends set of manny hubs in the past.
What is the advantage of the part-time kit versus manual hubs? Looks like just manual hubs and a spool for the transfer case, correct?
How do you go about doing this? I could see 2H with the hubs unlocked, but 4L? Isn't an 80's t-case just 4H-N-4L ?2H and 4L in your xfer case. limited... but it's a mod, not necessarily an upgrade.

???? This is if you modify the case with the P/T kit... it's no longer 4H-N-4L. You've modified it...
So to get the 2H, you have to unlock hubs, correct? The only thing that changes with the transfer case is the elimination of the viscous coupler, correct?

No. the elimination of the VC would make it a 91-92 transfer case. LOL. Same case, without the VC. That is a totally different mod.
The P/T kit has the pieces needed to make the xfer P/T.
