Is once a year often enough? Seems that it would saturate and start feeding oil into the intake.

And want to weigh in on this thread? :hmm:

It's a very minute amount over a long period of time. It's also really easy to see the build up and swap out when it reaches a certain amount of saturation.

I went to Medford and back, sitting a hair below half now :D

Hopefully I will have to fill up this weekend, from a guessing point I am not thinking there was much of a gain if any.

After first tank here are the results:

Last 12 tanks of gas:

10.4
10.5
10.6
10.0
10.7
9.3
9.4
8.9
7.8
8.3
10.0
10.4

After the injector cleaning:

10.6

Glad I wasn't holding my breath!!! But it sure does run smoother regardless.

You just run regular, right?

Have you tried running premium and seeing if it makes a difference? Supposedly the 1FZ has some advanced timing features that is supposed to take advantage of the higher octane when available (and can also handle lower crappy octane, which is why it's so easy to switch to propane).

I know that the last time I ran premium I saw a significant bump in fuel mileage (that's when I got 15.9). It didn't quite work out to be cost efficient though.

You see that 7.8 MPG listed up above, that was one tank of premium I ran for the hell of it. Nothing special done during the consumption of that tank, just the usual. Apparently my rig hates the spendy stuff!

You could try resetting the ECU and then going for a couple drive cycles with premium. That'll clear the stored data and it should run properly after 2 drive cycles on just premium.

Hmm, your rig is strange. Especially since you have LT's MAF mod, that's supposed to add 2 MPG!

Could be all the crap on and in my rig at all times!

Even with all that, it should run *BETTER* with premium. Not worse.

On my 'sporty' car I run premium but it really just gives me a little bit more power and maybe 1-1.5mpg difference. In the end it doesn't pay for itself in mileage but for something that is trying to be fast it helps a little in that department.

I agree that it doesn't pay for itself with an 80 (at least that I've seen).

I used regular in my MR2 once though. Holy crap...ran horrible, and my gas mileage dropped a ton (like 7 MPG IIRC).

Lower octane fuel ignites easier and burns more of it. Higher octane takes a higher level of compression and heat to ignite and does not burn as easily. So you should get better efficiency out of the cheapest that you can run without your "knock" sensor retarding the timing. Learned that when selecting a motor for my steet rod...

That's true but with the higher octane fuel the motor you can advance the timing.

Supposedly one of the advantages of the 80 was that it can advance the timing when using a high octane fuel, which makes it more efficient.

There's some interesting discussion on it here:

Actually, I wonder if G's timing is set low. His block has been torn apart, so it's a possibility.

I've pondered advancing my timing and seeing if I can run premium and an advanced timing for more power and fuel mileage. I won't do that until I get a SG though and can get some real numbers.

It's worth mentioning that the best gas mileage numbers I've ever seen was on premium. Got 15.9 MPG in Yosemite, with 4 people and fully loaded. Normally I was around 14 MPG freeway.

Now 2 MPG extra isn't worth it $$$ wise. But there is the extra advantage of premium typically having extra detergent in it, which helps keep the engine a bit cleaner.

:meh:

The SG reads timing so it's real easy. IIRC mine is at 4* right now.

Hmm, I think that might be off spec.

Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 3° BTDC @ idle
(Transmission in neutral position and A/C OFF)

There's also this:

FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing: 2 - 13° BTDC @ idle
(Transmission in neutral position and A/C OFF)
HINT:
The timing mark moves in a range between 2° and 13°.

ethanol makes for bad MPG yes? I think in the work rig my MPG dropped a couple when they started mandating that chit. :meh:

Will check tomorrow at normal operating temp.

4* at idle in N no A/C at normal operating temp. I have heard of advancing them to 6* but to be careful of pining. I used to ping occasionally at 4* but that was before LT MAF, I don't think I have pinged since. So maybe I will get it up 2* sometime and try it out.

That's 1* higher than spec (at least for my '97, but I doubt that it'd be any different for your '95).

You could try backing it down to 3* and see what happens to your mileage. Or leave it at 4*, clear your ECU, and run only premium in it for a few tanks to see if it adjusts to the higher octane. (Some people swear that running the advanced timing and higher octane results in more power and better fuel efficiency).

I'm assuming you're not getting any pinging/knocking? A good way to test is to put it in 2nd start, and accelerate from a stop at WOT up a steep hill. That maximizes the amount of load on the engine. Even in that situation you should hear at most a light pinging (as per the manual), but several people who have done it haven't heard any.

Should be able to just shoot it with a light I imagine. I will read the threads you linked but haven't yet in case my timing light is already answered in them.
