Anyone know the width difference between a 80 series front axle and a light duty lj78 axle. Thinkin about swapping and my gears are turning. biggest pluses would be diff locker, shock outside the springs and more front spring options.... Whatya think?

Sorry, I can't answer the question, but if I were you I'd find the closest 80 and arrange to have a good look/measure with your LJ78 side by side. There's got to be a 80 series mud owner that lives *near* you.

Yea some guy parked next to me with a rhd lifted 80 and thats what sparked the idea. wish i had my measuring tape on me.....damnn

The 80 series axle housing is much wider... not going to be a simple fit.

The gears, however, will fit - but you will need to install the whole third member, and then fit in a rear third member to get the correct ratio to match the front (4.10 is what the 80 series uses in North America, the LJ78 is 4.88 and with an oddball off-set in the front for the pinion relationship to the ring gear).

Yea i know my 3rd is the oddball 4.88 carrier. got a line on a front and rear today so ill ho with that. i still dont like the shock in side the spring setup. the body sometimes rides against the top spring perch slightly. what about rebuildable coilovers? Anything in a decent price range? or do an offset shock hoop toward the rear of the wheel well and a new mount on rear of diff?
