Planning on prepping and painting my 80 for the next 5 days.

My goal is to get it all finished up in time to head out to the Kentucky trail ride on Wednesday evening.

I have a plan in place with plenty of leeway. So I should be able to finish if I stick to my timeline.

If anybody wants to come hang out or help. Let me know.

Basically will be in the garage until I am done.

Picked up the 2 stage paint and epoxy primer just now.

Wish me luck.

If you are using HVLP guns make sure that you are using high flow male and female hardware on your air hoses. Makes a big difference.

Yep. Got the high flow stuff already. Thanks.

Does any one know?

I am looking to find out what product people are using on the front fenders. It looks like black silicone, like the stuff you use on roofs.
It is rubbery and seals the fender to the body.
I am having a hell of a time cutting it to remove the front fenders. But once I get the fenders done I want to reattach them and want to order the product now before I need it.

My plan is to use the product in link below:

Advance Auto Parts - Down for Maintenance - https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/permatex-black-silicone-adhesive-sealant-11-oz.-81173/12024672-p?product_channel=local&store=4207&adtype=pla&product_channel=local&store_code=4207&gbraid=0AAAAAD05GhUvU75PhCfQUJJYyUakkJWiz&gbraid=0AAAAAD05GhUvU75PhCfQUJJYyUakkJWiz&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzqSWBhDPARIsAK38LY98XphETMmL97DM70Xka3cpjEmGFJW4qErhlVqZ-U9zmbpvANV2wRMaAqwQEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
Unless someone has another suggestion.

I have 2 tubes of Sean sealer but I figured that was a bit excessive. It’s not like water doesn’t get back there anyway. I guess it will be a game time decision when they go back on.

Check out this for the flare gaskets

I’m not keeping the flares. I’m talking about the sealer between the fender and the inner fender. I’m pretty sure it is seam sealer which is more likely what I will use.

No worries.

Over 100 holes. What a pain in the butt.
So far so good. The truck is sanded down all the way to 400. I’m sanding the bodywork right now.
I really want to start taping tonight but will see.

Looking good!! Sanding is the hard part of the prep and attention to detail makes the final product.

Yeah. Luckily the body is pretty straight I just have to deal with paint chips mostly and the body work where I patched the holes. But since I used epoxy there is zero warpage. I’m sure if I would have welded the holes up I would have to do way more body work.

I used seam sealer on the connections between the inner fenders and outers. Works great - just stuff a screw driver or pry bar in to create room for your nozzle and pump away. Stuff is sticky so be careful to clear up after.

Reading this thread gives me a bit of PTSD... My paint took me way longer than you are planning and it's a job for sure so wish you luck! Are you doing a color change? Not having to jamb my truck out saved a bit of time. I also pulled my hood and tailgate / hatch and painted them off the truck. Did my front fenders the same way but somehow wound up getting the base coat thinner and having a bit of color difference with the rest of the rig (only visible in very direct sunlight and at only certain angles).

My biggest learning / mistake was not going back with single stage paint. My truck was black and single stage - wish I had done that same paint as it makes fixing defects much easier. Touch ups would be a breeze as well comparatively.

Thanks for the info. I am going with two stage. But I’m basically going to do everything the way you describe doing yours.

Taping has started. Trim is painted. Going to be a long night. Doing all seams and body tonight.
This will let the paint dry and I can start putting it together tomorrow.

I will do the roof once the paint is dry enough to tape over it. Then keep putting the truck together while the roof dries.

You are insane crazy man…but I wish I banged out my painting in a similar manner vs prolonging the ‘process’!
