The axle I ordered is 55" hub face to Hub face. The back space of my rims are
4-7/8". The hard part is getting the axle low enough to get the tires to clear the wheel wells. So far the bottom of the frame sits 7" from the bottom of the trailer then I think I will need 4 1/2" shackles and the axle will be underslung.

I found a snug top for mine with out the glass on the side but the guy sold it out from under me..... I have been thinking of one of the soft sided toppers for mine.

So if I'm running 3.5" backspaced wheels, I would need an axle 2-3/4" narrower than yours, or 52-1/4" - right? Did you get a hub face to hub face measurement on the OEM axle?

What tire size are you going to run? I have 3 33x10.50x15 BFG ATs to go on Toy 60/62 15x7 rims. I'd like them to tuck in the fenders, but be out as wide as possible. Does anyone make fender flares for these old trucks? I'm not against cutting a little fender.

Tell me about the soft sided toppers. Do you mean like a Can-Back?

Keep up the great work and thanks for all the info!!

I never had the OEM axle.
What I did was measure from the inside of the rim to the out side of the tire which was 6", My frame is 39" wide, plus I wanted 2" clearance between the frame and the tire.

So...........
6" LH Wheel
6" RH Wheel
2" LH Clear
2" RH Clear
+ 39" Frame

55" Axle Hub face to Hub face

I will be running 265/70 R17 which are 31.61" X 10.43" These are acutally the same radius as the wheel openings and the tread of the tire should not stick out.

I may eventually put some 285/70 R17 which are 33.83" X 11.22"

I have not found anyone that has fender flares for these trailers. Im sure there is something out there that would be close but its a matter of finding them. I have comtemplated making my own but that wont be anytime soon. There are also the rubber lips you can put on but those look like S!@#!...

As far as the topper I have been looking at Soft Toppers..............
Pickup Truck Toppers, Camper Shells & Caps - Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Dodge & More
the Tacoma Model # TN 73 is close in size and is $559.00. I talked to them on the phone today to see if they could make one with out the window at the front and to see since it will be on a trailer you dont have the cab of the truck in front so how will it hold up to the wind. The suggested making the front piece longer so you can snap it to the bed. They said they will look into it closer and get back to me.

Also I hope you dont mind that I Hijack your thread....

No hijak at all. You are providing great technical info and some awesome pics!

Thanks

Recieved my axle today, Tomarrow I will pick up my springs and shackles.

I made a mistake and had them weld the spring seats in the wrong location..... I guess measure 15 times and weld once was not enough.... I cut them off allready but need to get some new ones to weld on.

Spent about 5 hours today screwing around trying to mount the axle it turns out that the wheel openings on the bed are different 1 opening is about 3/8" further forward than the other.

More tongue weight will stop the wag Im going to put a spare tire on the front and some batteries to help add more tounge weight, You need about 15%+ of the trailer weight up on the tongue I figure my triailer weighs about 500 lbs as she sits right now so I need about 75 pounds sitting on the tongue the spare up front will take care of that pretty easy. Right now it seems pretty light up front Im planning on weighing the tongue tomarrow.

I weighed the tongue this weekend and it weighs 25 lbs and 50 lbs with the spare rim sitting on it, once I install the jack and the tire and finish gusseting the tongue I should be ok.

Markgyver,

Man that thing looks great! I assume you're painting it the same voodo blue as the FJC?

I got lucky and found a camper top for $25. It was used by a small town fire dept and some guy had it in his yard with a for sale sign on it. It is about 2 or 3 inches too long, but the width is perfect. A 5 or 6 inch piece of aluminum would easily fill the gap. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

Keep up the good work!

Trailer Color

Yep its going to be Voodoo Blue. I am going to Raptor line the rocker areas of the trailer black and the inside and front Voodoo blue
