WOW!! Thanks for posting.

Looks like your PO did what I wish my PO had done - bent the frame to form the tongue.

I would love to see it with the SOA and new tires. Any idea what the backspacing is on your wheels?

What is the height from the ground to the top-most curve of the tire cut-out?

Sounds like an axle seal is bad which is allowing diff gear oil to seep past and land in your wheel?

Love the lights!

Mcmanus: snag an old camper shell & you've got instant expedition storage/security... one of my neighbors runs a full-size pickup bed like that.

Here's my Yota trailer

I believe mine is a 1982 2 wheel drive pickup bed. I bought it already converted to a trailer. I took the original axle out and made a custom axle using old FJ40 front drum brake components and went SOA. It rides on 31X10.50's on some old FJ60 rims that I had lying around. It works really well. I don't use it at all for expedition use, I built a different trailer for that. I use this trailer for hauling miscellaneous crap like furniture, wood, and junk to go the dump. I have used it mainly for hauling clothes to the needy. My wife and mother in law own a 2nd hand store and what does not sell, they donate to the needy. I'm usually the one to haul the stuff off. This trailer has clocked well over 10K miles in the past few years. Best $150 I have ever spent.

Good luck with your project. I am sold on these trailers, they work really well.

is the gun runnergonna drag that sucker to the scc this year?

Thats the plan.

Lots of work to do on the GunRunner and the new axle and spring upgrade on the trailer. Got a lot done on the new MTCage on Saturday.

See you there!

Hey Grease Cruiser, nice trailer. I really like the cap.

Can you post pictures of how the trailer tongue conversion was done?

Thanks very much.

There is a tag on the trailer that says it was built by Long Beach Fabricators in Calif.
I like the camper shell idea.

I wish I had taken pictures of it behind my 80 with the lift and tires.

I am not sure when my buddy is going to get back from Texas.

Not sure what the back spacing is, but the tire sidewalls are less that an inch from the frame.

For the spring over, I did it the redneck way. I just flipped the axle over and pluged up the breather. I need to drill a new hole in the top for a new breather, maybe that is how I blew the axle seal.

In the future I plan to rig a hand brake to the exsisting E brake for when it is parked. Just on the military trailers.

How does the spare mount work on the front of your trailer? I just strap mine on the front. If yours works I will relocate the mount from under the back to the front. The tongue weight provided by the spare helps the stability of the trailer.

great post. thanks everyone for the pics. I've been looking for the old toyota pickup beds and havn't found any that are in good shape. lately i have been thinking of going the m416 rout but this post has me leaning back to the pickup bed with a camper top. anyone know of one in the north ms area?

Here ya go. Not the greatest configuration but it works. As mentioned, I did not do it. Personally, I wish there was enough room to do some sort of box up front. I could cut the channel out and redo it but it works for what I use it for. I have my spare mounted in the factory location, under the rear of the bed. I have to be careful how I load the trailer. I have to load the front pretty heavy or the trailer will tend to sway and wander down the road behind me.

Hope that helps.

I have not mounted a spare to the front of the bed yet. The PO just unbolted the spare hoist/mount from the crossmember and bolted it to the bed.

Looks like I found 3 33x10.50 BFG ATs so I better clean and paint the wheels.

anyone know of one in the north ms area?

I'd check the junk yards in Tupelo, and around Memphis. Build it like you want it.

Good luck

Everything traveled well. After driving thru the rain, I had to stop and tighten the straps again. Getting the top off my 100 in the dark and solo was a challenge! Now I'm trying to find a use for the sunroof.

Thanks again

My Trailer Build

Here are my pics for my Toyota Trailer build. This bed is near perfect shape the guy I bought it from started the body work.
Im in the process of building the frame for it right now. I will be running some stock FJ cruiser rims with 265/70 R17

WOW! That looks fantastic.

Please take lots of pics of the frame you build.

Post up with your progress DAILY.

Thanks and good luck.

I should be getting the axle this week. I ordered a 3500 lb with brakes Im probably going to use 2000 lb springs to soften the ride.
I will take plenty of pics with the bed of the frame and post them. Here are a few other pics.

77TLCFJ40 Do you have any recent pics of your trailer?

Sorry, but any new pics would look just like the old ones. I've been too busy getting the 40 back together and have not had any time to give to the trailer.

I'm considering going with a 3500 lb 6 on 5.5 hub axle with a parking brake. What width did you order? What size tires are you running? What is your wheel backspacing? I think I'm going to use FJ40 Rear springs over the axle. I have FJ40 front springs I could use to add a leaf or two if necessary.

I'm also keeping my eyes open for a cheap camper top or tonneau.

Thanks
