Hey all,

can anyone tell whether a pto gear set up off a 75 series (also suit an 80 series) will bolt up to my 78 series prado? I"m guessing the answer is no being different transfers, but I though I would ask any way.

Cheers, Tassie KZJ

Hi Yah

You will need the gear and spacer.
36215‑60030 Gear
36251‑60030 Spacer or 36251‑60050
I got mine from an earlier 70 series....

Have a look at this link..
It shows all the trucks that had the gear fitted...
Hit the blue text to open and show models and years. (not sure how upto date the data base is)

Cheers, so I've got to get an extra gear that goes inside the transfer aswell?

I had a look through the list of vehicles, the 75's are called up, but the 80's aren't so i'm still a bit unsure whether it'll fit

This is what I'm looking at:
Toyota Landcruiser pto winch | Other Parts & Accessories | Gumtree Australia Launceston Area - Launceston 7250

Im no expert on these things but I thought the drive gear is already in the transfer case(at least on the 75 series) and you just add the PTO.
One problem you might have is the length of the drive shaft as the 75 series has a longer nose than a KZJ78.
At that price you wont have any problems reselling it if it doesnt fit. I saw a 75 series PTO here for sale,no winch or anything else with it and it went for $500.The seller said he wished he had one for each of the 10 phone calls he had asking about it.
But I would be cautious about the missing shifter ,it maybe hard to track down used as there is only one per PTO.

In short yes... Our trucks were never specd to have a PTO winch only electric...
But all the chassis mount points are there and the floor pan has the indications to where the lever would go thru....
You can check by removing the PTO cover on the transfer case... If you see a thin gear to the rear with a short spacer... Bingo you have one...
But if its just a long spacer.... doh !

I have never come across one yet with it fitted factory... Good old Toyota saving money...

The drive shaft's aren't too much of a worry, just shorten them. Not many people down here seem to like / have pto's not sure why, they just seem to prefer electric. I'm sure I could come up with something creative for the selected if I decided to go down this track.

Cheers for that, I can't see there being the extra gear in there. I think I'll give the pto idea a miss, by the time I find someone wrecking a transfer with the gear in it (our 4by wrecker's down here a thieving rogues) & put a few meter's of rope on I could buy a electric winch. I'd be all over it if I new there was the pto gear in the transfer.

Its a pain in the :censor: that Mr Toyota didnt put the drive gears into all the split transfercases, I had a NZ new 40 series with a split case that had one in from factory but my NZ new 75 series didnt have one, all the jap import 60/70 series cruisers we got out here seemed to have them, I've got drive gears and ptos on both my trucks now plus a drive gear in my spare gearbox... they seem to be pretty sought after items at times :grinpimp:

Im guessing you will go with the electric option, but if you don't and need a selector i would be happy to part ways with one of my spare ones. I scavenged a bunch of PTO gear off an old BJ42 a mate was giving away. Im up in deviot plan on having my PTO setup on a HJ75 within the next 6 months!

Cheers and good luck with it!

Thanks for the offer, I was thinking about it a bit more, I think electric will probably be better, just for the fact that if my bus was to stop at least I can still hopefully pull my self out, that's the only real down side I can find with pto set up, it would be alright if it was just a secondary winch, like kbushnz's setup, but we have to run our exhaust to the back, so I don't have the room there

I spent many hours trying to work out how to fit a PTO winch into a HJ75 with a 2H as the exhaust goes inside the chassis on the PTO side. And after a bit of easy fab work and a bend or two in the exhaust you can actually fit a PTO with the exhaust running full length and out the back. I just need to track down a bullbar/fab one up so i can mount the winch which is currently holding me up.

Im looking for a winch for more than just recovery, handy to pull logs around, tighten up slacklines, and other bits and pieces! Have you seen the thomas PTO's set up with starter motors? They have one at launy 4x4 on an old HJ75 ute. Apparently they are quiet good, but i would not know thats just what the wrecker told me  , they look like holden starter motors. Could be an option!

Cheers

The pto should clear my exhaust, if not it would be reasonably easy to rectify. But I was talking about the mid mount pto kbushnz did in this thread:

I'm thinking of getting the tigerz 11 winch, they're ~$800, so not really worth stuffing around with trying to convert a pto to electric.
