I have a '74 fj40 in need of a transplant. I have been looking for a 74 engine at the right price, but no luck. While I wait, I am consindering other options as they come up. Is a 84 FJ60 a viable donor? Here is a list of what must change and what I may change:

Engine - Must
Transfer case - Must
Tansmission - Maybe
axels - Maybe

Thanks

Somewhere in there, the FJ-60's changed from the two engine mounts on the back of the Bell housing to a cross-member under the transmission.

If you go this route, there is some work to do in this area, although from what I understand, it's not too significant.

I heard this is a good swap, that's not too involved. No firsthand experience, though.

I have a '72 FJ40 that I recently put a '85 FJ60 motor and trans into. The only part I needed to swap was the bellhousing as mentioned in the earlier post. The FJ60 bellhousing does not have the motor mounts needed. Other than that the swap is seamless. As far as the axles go, I'm pretty sure the 60 axles are wider than 40 axles by about 3".
