I recently rebuilt my head and I am now looking at my rocker assembly. I am trying to decide weather to rebuild or not. The reason I took the head off was because I was getting significant valve noise. When the shop rebuilt the head they found a bent exhaust valve on #6.

Here are a few shots of the rocker shaft.

I brought the shaft to a local engine shop and he said it was marginal with about 3 thousandths wear.

He also measured the wear in the rocker bushings and got about 1 1/2 thousands wear.

The rocker faces were also worn. Hear is a shot.

I decided to remove the wear from the rocker faces with a file. I have a picture below. When I showed the guy at the engine shop he thought that was a bad idea and recommended having all the rockers professionally re-surfaced.

I am trying to decide on my best option. I could replace the rocker shaft part # 13901-60022 from Village Toyota Parts for $107 plus shipping to eliminate the 3 thousandths of wear and reuse my existing rocker bushings, or I could replace both the rocker shaft and the bushings (part #13801A) for $196 plus shipping. If I bought the bushings however, I would have to have the shop remove my old ones and press in the new for around $30 more.

The last option is to just resurface the rockers and just put it back together.

Does anyone have guidance on this?

It doesn't look that bad visually, but .005 total clearance is not good, so I would be inclined to either replace the whole shebang with new parts or get a good used assembly.

Thanks pinhead. I ordered the shaft and 12 rocker bushings. I can't find part numbers for the bushings that are in the shaft supports. Are those typically replaced at the same time?

Village Toyota parts canceled my order. I don't know why yet, but I am trying Online Toyota Parts.

Online Toyota parts could find the bushings, but not the rocker shaft, which they said has been discontinued. The only place I could find the shaft is at $OR.

$OR was not able to find a new rocker shaft. Used only. I plan to replace the bushings and resurface the rocker faces.

When I cleaned up the valve side of rocker arm, I used a honing stone to very carefully remove the excess material and maintain the correct radius (to me the file approach is a bit crude). This also results in a shiny smooth surface. Just saying.
