We didnt need trumpets last year, My dad slept in the truck and set off the alarm promptly at 7AM the first morning......

Thinking of visiting Moab to fart around for a night or 2 after HIH. Been once and loved it, but I was in a rental and only stayed for a few hours. Such a cool place. Anyone else by chance thinking the same? I'll know for sure closer to the date.
I'm thinking about doing the same.

@paflytyer and I are setting out to blow some minds with organization this year (ok, kind of). Folks like @dubitup @krice118 @DanInDenver, @climberoleg etc., expect to hear the early sounding of trumpets as we rally folks to their pre-determined starting points. No more mornings walking around in your pajamas with a Pop-Tart in your hand with solo cup in the other asking when we leave for Black Bear....:)

I feel a personal attack was just launched! Real problem was my 3yo had the red solo cup from the night before. Made for an interesting ride down Black Bear.....

Thanks to you both for all the work on this.

Not being familiar with the event and typical sequence of events, I have a question for those that have gone previously: If people were to camp one night and hotel the other (Friday and Saturday), which do you think would be better for the hotel? No difference?

I was one of the lucky wait-listee's so I'll be joining this year. :)

Sorry first timer here, a couple similar questions:
  1. Does the event begin on Friday morning? In other words, we should stay near Ouray Thursday night?
  2. So Friday and Saturday nights we'll stay at Ouray or Ironton, but where are we after Sunday's trails? Will we be back to Ouray where everyone decides where to go next on themselves? Or will we take Black Bear Pass to Telluride where the event ends?

@thegreatgazoo

You will want to get to ironton or whereever the campsite is Thursday to set up camp. Trail runs will be Friday/Saturday and i think a smaller group did some Sunday runs. (I am going off last years experience)

We left Sunday but several people hung around and left Monday morning. the Campground is very relaxed. It is down a dirt road off the main 2 lane road. nothing special but is perfect for HIH, scenic views and a nearby creek.

Ironton or campsite will be HQ. Several trails Start and End in Telluride. We take some trails that are near Ironton and do half day trails to Telluride, then u can take Highway or another few hours or so of trails back to Camp

I know everyone is amped up (as are we), so let me get a few more things out there.

We will run official trails on Fri, Sat and Sun. There will be impromptu trail runs before and after the event as well.

Don't drink the mountain water around the area. It looks clean, but most of it is not. The water in the area is mostly contaminated with mine tailings.

We will be a little more structured this year just based on the number of vehicles. We're still small, but not nearly as small as we used to be.

Meet someone new. The whole point is for us to meet new and old friends. Walk around and introduce yourself to someone new.

Moab is going to be stupid hot that time of year.

If you're sleeping in a RTT or trailer, please don't pick a flat grassy area for camp. Let's leave those for the tent campers.

Bring a tarp, it will probably rain. Bring rain gear too.

Potluck and raffle are Friday night.

Most folks arrive on Thursday.

There are other areas to camp close by if you cannot find a good spot at HQ. We'll be here. Google Maps

There is a very slight chance we'll change locations if we can secure something more appropriate, but it's not likely.

If you don't like kids, you may want to camp a little ways away. We encourage the kids to run around and have fun.

We will have porta-potties.

You can shower in town for $3-5. The Ouray pool is tons of fun, so bring swim gear. There are hot springs in the area too. Take a soak.

Ouray, Telluride, Ridgway and Silverton are small mountain towns. If you're on my Black Bear run, we'll stop at the Telluride market for lunch and there is a full grocery store there as well. The closest large town is Montrose, about an hour away from camp. Anything you can think of is there. Montrose is also a good place to head if you're really feeling the altitude.

in addition to rain gear that Stan has mentioned...if you have the room...rubber boots are not a bad idea either... based on the last 3 years experience...and a plastic tote to throw all of your wet stuff into, in case we have some seasonal showers!

Who else is making the trip from Arizona? Let me know if anyone is interested in a caravan.
Flagstaff, we are going and would love to convoy with you.

I'm coming from Chandler. Will have to wait and see on time off and when we can leave. May be hard to synchronize but can try.

Already making a mile long list of things we need. Nice lists posted so far. Although I have a good start...100 series, check. Tent, check. Sleeping bags, check. Gas & food, check. Anything beyond that are creature comforts that we'll try to collect. Coming for the views and people anyway, can purchase those.

It is possible Kim and I may be trying to do a day or two before or after. We are looking at our work schedules now. As of right now we are looking at a loop through moab, Zion, Grand Cayon National, and back home.

Since your coming from Flagstaff does that mean your bringing some lumberyard brewing beer:beer:
If you would like, I could pick some up for you.

Lol don't go to any trouble....I went there a few weeks ago when the family and I were staying in Flagstaff, was impressed with their beers

I'll definitely bring some Hop Knot IPA from Four Peaks Brewery (Tempe).
