Regretfully, up for sale is my 1968 FJ45. I am the 3rd owner. The vehicle was purchased new by a farmer in the dry climate of central New South Wales. Once he became too old to drive, it was sold to the owner of the adjoining farm in approximately 1998 - where it was used on the property for approximately 4 years before being dry stored for 8 years until September 2011 when I purchased it. Of course, some petrol down the carburetor, air in the tyres and it started right up and drove out of the barn. What else would you expect?
It was my intention to restore the vehicle but unfortunately, a change in circumstances means that somebody else now gets the chance.
About the vehicle…..Good & bad:
The body tub is as close to mint as you would hope to find – there is a finger nail sized section of corrosion under the windscreen in one place, otherwise there is no rust in the body tub, even under the roof join.
It appears a welsh plug in the rear of the engine was once replaced – accessed from inside the cabin rather than pulling the engine, so there is a ‘U’ shaped cut in the firewall which will tack up easily.
The bonnet and apron are in excellent condition. The front guards and doors show signs of a life well lived with some cracking.
The vehicle has a quick remove hardtop with a 15cm long/2cm deep dent in it.
The ute/pickup tub would take some effort to repair – some rust on both sides where the side panels join the floor and every panel has its fair share of knocks and dents. The floor is bowed from years of carrying 44 gal drums of fuel around.
Other mechanical details…
F engine, which starts and runs well.
Three speed transmission. All gears present and shifts as you would hope but with a lot of play in the shift linkages.
Transfer case shifts well and functions normally.
Clutch functions but the master (I think) is leaking meaning it needs to be pumped.
Brakes are not functioning properly as pedal sinks to the floor. The master cylinder is leaking.
This vehicle is 100% original and nothing seems to be missing.
Its an outstanding restoration candidate and due to the fantastic tub condition I won’t be letting it go too cheaply. Please don’t ring if you plan to try and steal it from me but otherwise, get in touch if you want to know more about this fantastic old truck.
Lastly, I have had 4 new (wider) rims fitted onto the OE wheel centres (hub cap type, not splits). And will include these hard to come by items with the vehicle if my target price is reached (same as I paid).
