Good morning and happy Monday. I am hoping I might be able to get some suggestions/help. I have a 1966 FJ40 that my wife's Grandfather bought brand new in 1967. He gave it to my father-in-law in the 1990's and it sat for well over 30 years unmoving. My father-in-law gave it to me and my wife in 2021. I was gun-ho, got it trailered down to Sahuarita, (thanks to 86R100RS) and got to work. I pulled the carb and got it rebuilt. Pulled the engine and took it to Baker's automotive in Tucson to be rebuild. Got the Transmission and transfer case rebuilt, and got the body stripped and repainted. The roof was redone, seats reupholstered, and a bunch of parts purchased. Then, my job sent me overseas so it sat. While I was overseas, I found a company not to far away that was willing to put it all back together again and rebuild the axles, redo the brakes, and redo the wiring. They have had the vehicle and all the pieces since 2022 and for one reason or another, have not been able to do any work on it and it does not look like they are going to be able to do anything on it so I am going to end up paying to tow it back, plus have to purchase an engine stand/lift, and a few other things and then go through the learning process of building it back up myself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but since I am in Iraq right now and will most likely be overseas for another 4 years, it just delays the amount of time the poor vehicle stays in pieces. Does anyone know of a reputable place that can put together an FJ40 that won't rip me off and will treat it well? Or, should I just suck it up, wait until I have time, and do the work myself, with the help of my boys, even though that may take many more years???

I think you need to weigh a few things to see which way the scales tip.

On one side there is having someone do the work and you arrive back in the states to a running rig that you can start enjoying. On the opposite, there is a massive project that you may well find great joy and satisfaction in. If you distill it all down to the essence of each option, the cost is the same in resources. You will either work many hours to pay for a shop to do the work, or you will work many hours to learn and do the work yourself. You have to ask yourself which is the more value add for your life.

In life, we have resources of time, money, and energy. The only one of those that is truly finite is time. Would you rather spend your time paying for the work, or doing the work yourself? Which will bring you more joy? Do you have a wife that will enjoy Sunday drives to get breakfast, or do you have sons that would enjoy doing the work with you? Do you even want to deal with the work, or is the work to get there equal to completing the rig itself? Once you figure that out, the path will be chosen for you.
