Found a set of used 63 in Chevy springs that I thought might work on the WB stretch for the 40, but they are REEEEEEAAAAALY LOOOOOONNG! Im thinking TOO LONG!

Anyone running these? If so, can I get some pics of the placement?
RustyTLC and I did some preliminary measurements over a beer at his house today...Seems like it COULD work, but.

Thanks,

Chicago

those are long on a pickup pretty much as long as the whole box if i remember. way too long for a cruiser

Has anybody used Chevy Astro springs? I was working under my Astro the other day and the springs caught my eye. They are about 2 1/2"?(measured but don't remember) wide, 54" long, and 28" from the center of the fixed eye to the center pin. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at them but I do remember thinking they looked like they would be real soft and flexy. They might need a leaf added to keep from being too soft.

I'm running them on the rear of my 60... they are VERY long from what most of us in the landcruiser world are used to. The front hangers are somewhat where the stock hangers used to be. You can see how far back I had to move the axle back to make them fit. Making them work on a 40 might be pretty tough.

Yeup...Id be hosed with the 40!
Looks bad ass brotha! Dont have to worry about that ass end over hang now like that!
Cali crusier used em, and they sat pretty much in the stock location on his 60.

Stretch your frame, and tub 12" and then run em.. :smokin:

those are the common replacement for mini rears . ?

Really depends on the placement of the hangers. In my case I was trying to conceal the 60 fat arse by extending the wheel base. I bet you could make it work on a 40 but the front hanger would have to be underneath the door. :)

Better off linking it at that point.

Here's a decent thread on the 63s....

63" Chevy 1/2-ton spring swap FAQ!! - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

NICE!
That is a good write up.
You have effectively succeeded at eliminating that big ass on the 60. I really like that idea.
As for me and my goal...I would rather stretch the tub and frame than link it at this point. Ive heard too many BAD outcomes to a linked suspension. I know leafs work, theyre cheap and theyre easy. That is my deal.
Ah well...Ill see where it all ends up with the new drive train in place (mocked up) and then figure what has to happen. Im hoping that I can get away with NOT stretching the tub and frame and just squeeze it in with some massaging of the springs and motor placement and such.
Sooooo aside from the 60 series springs or the 55 series springs, are there other good alternatives that might be easily obtainable?
Wagoneer springs, id be in the same boat. I found a couple other chevy springs on some rigs that I looked at that were in the 53 in range, but I donno how they function.

Thanks for the input!

I'd go with the longest leaf you can get under there. I've also seen 54s in the JY that looked interesting on the domestics. I'm running some ford ranger rears on my front that are 58s and built a hybrid pack. Also look for the 1 ton stuff that has a bunch of leaves (or buy 4 packs), take a couple out and plan to put a couple back in if it's too soft. Just keep some length on your ubolts for leaf adding. Definitely replace the bushings too.

Leafs are great because they are so simple. Setting up my rear leaves was cake compared to linking my front. Basically a couple days compared to MONTHS!

I think boots is on the right track as far as springs. 63 are nice and cheap but they freakin LONG. I believe there are some 52" chevy springs out there that are cheap and guys have had good luck with. Might check into those.

Thanks fellas!
I had found a set of the 53 (or 54) inchers when I was scrounging around out there. Might have to re visit that.

thanks dude ..

I was thinking in lower cut fenders on Tencha with longer spring packs in the rear .. yo know something cheap but don't want to cut my facotry hangers .. ( fixed and shackles ) just looking for one springs that can be suited using factory hangers ..

Tapage...
These are a nice CHEAP option. Im not sure what the bone yard pickings are like down there in Panama, but here...
I thought they were reasonable for as BEEF and flexy as they are.
Ive gotta see what happens with the drive train. I had a thought...

Thanks Keith ..

After some intersting reading in Pirate ..

BTW hijack my self .. I already have a user in Pirate .. but I need to pay to post and reply thread in the forum ..?

hijac off ..

Loos those are the real solution with the double shackle setup looks baddas .. the item it the new front hanger ..

I want to keep my rear axle position are comparable spring pack that don't need to relocate the front hanger ?

63" Chevy springs

Friend of mine cut the rear hanger off the bottom of the rear crossmember, mounted them vertical off the back of the rear crossmember and used those springs with anti inversion shackles. This is on an FJ40 with Cummins 4bt, SM420, and Orion on 37's, it flexes and climbs awsome. Easily out climbed rigs with lower gears (347:1), similar wheelbase/tire combos

Can you get any pics of the set up?
Id be interested to see where the front hanger was relocated to.
Thanks for posting up.

63" springs

I can e-mail you a pic to see if you PM me an address. Front hanger is stock position, springs do protrude about 4" behind rear crossmember.
