So first snow comes and I had the truck in 4WD. Front hubs locked, button pushed. Tried to take it out of 4WD by pushing the button and it won't come out. Did the forward/reverse thing, unlocked and locked the hubs again, nothing. Light still on. What's the usual suspect on this? Vacuum line?

It's the solenoids on the firewall, the 2WD one is now fried. It's a really stoopid design, Toyota should be ashamed for the way they wired those things. Problem is, a new one is over $400. In the meantime, just swap the vacuum lines that go from the solenoids down to the transfer, then it will pop out of 4WD.

There is a post in the FAQ about replacing it with a solv from a celica that runs about 18.00. All that is needed is a couple of new crimp connectors. I am having the same problem and am getting ready to order two of them so I can replace both valves.

IIRC, Randy88FJ62 did a recent write up on another solenoid (not the celica one). Could also try to get the real one from someone parting their truck.

thanks all, FAQ is a good thing. Called the local dealer and the Celica part seems to be history but I ordered the other one. Be here in a few days. I put it on Calphi's tab for calling me a nub.

The one in Randy's write up.

FJ62 4WD Solenoid - Another Option

Here is a post I made a few months back. Good Luck!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A couple weeks ago after a brief 4WD outing, my 4WD light stayed on. On closer inspection, the front drive shaft WAS engaged due to a solenoid that failed. I searched MUD and discovered a few options for replacement, then went to the Toyota dealer here in Tacoma.

Of the options available, not one was available (including the '91 Celica option - discontinued). The EXCEPTIONAL parts guru (Al at Titus Will Toyota) accepted the challenge of finding a suitable alternative. He secured two possibilities and worked with me to figure out which one of the two would work.

For $18.57 (+ tax), I got PN: 88691-89107 - Valve, Magnet, No. 1. It fits in the bracket, but the mounting screw doesn't quite line-up. I used a zip tie to secure it - it's working like a champ! After installing it last night, I gave it a test run and had no issues.

Too bad all Toyota parts guys aren't as talented and dedicated as Al. Y'all enjoy a great Labor Day weekend!

I did the same thing awhile back. Here's the writeup.

my light came once before for a long time. the problem was leaking in the metal vacuum line in between the solenoid and the tcase(4hi diaphram).

i cut the metal line but left the ends so that i could use vacuum line to replace the hard lines between solenoid and tcase. i actually used windshield washer tubing, so it did not cost me anything.

my guess:
if you live in somewhere where they lay salt on the roads, check you lines.
if not, then check the solenoid.

vacuum assy valve

i had a similar problem, randy's thread really helped. i picked up a vsv for an 88 toyota pick up from my local dealer. autoparts places don't carry vsv; part# 88690-89132. it cost me all of 32.00 bucks. see randy's thread for mods on the installation; it took me around 15 minutes or so, just like magic poof!! stash
