Thanks I'm going to try to check it out Monday or Tuesday.

7 hours I won't get back. That 60 has been hit hard in the drivers side and had a lot of body work. Nothing on left side lines up, hood, fender, both doors.

Right side is beautiful. Can't believe Eric and I rode all that way for that.

That oil doesn't have enough ZDDP to protect the cam lobes from wearing out . Are you adding ZDDP separately?

So what oil does have enough ZDDP?

It's a zinc additive you can buy at AutoZone. Old conventional oils had lots of zinc in them. The newer conventionals and synthetics phased it out for regulatory reasons.

This article explains some of if (the only reason I know a "smidge" about this topic is I, that being a newb and an idiot, I read a bunch of MUD forums before I changed my oil on my 60 for the first time) and everyone was "freaking out about the zinc" so I bought the additive and dropped it in. I know nothing about engines, but apparently classic motors (like the 2F) need "the zincs" because of the type of CAMs they have. Very few places still carry oil with ZDDP in them (lots of discussion in the MUD forums about label reading and scouring shelves for old stock oils). Apparently, there's politics and money drivers involved on why the "big oil" companies have watered-down their products.

Debunking The Motor Oil Additive Urban Legend

Here the MUD threads in the 60 forum FAQ that discuss this:

Best oil weight to use...

So what kind of oil are you guys running

Guess I'll add some ZDDP (sounds like a WWE term) to my oil the next time I change it. It's a dang wonder the thing even still runs! What, with all this no lead gas and non ZDDP oil and all! lol

Ugh- When I went to look at the 62 he was selling he wanted to show me his 60, too. It was in the garage with the drivers side by the wall, so I never even would have guessed that side wasn't as perfect as the rest of the truck. He was real proud of it and it looked spotless inside, engine compartment, and out. Sorry if I put you on a wild goose chase.

The best value oil I have found is Mobil 1 15w-50. $25 for 5 qt jug at Walmarts
Setup up just right for a 2F and plus you can run it 1yr between oil changes.

See the attached pg 2, where they specifically talk to flat tappet engines and represent the ZDDP amount

Of course, I run Mobil 1 in everything so I am a little partial to their products. oil, gear oil, etc...

You can go buy ZDDP additives but you really don't know how much you are adding to reach to proper level. My math says you had to buy several bottles of this stuff to just get the needle to move on ZDDP content, especially engines with big oil pans like a Crusier. Not worth it when you can buy an oil with it already mixed appropriately.
Still better than doing nothing and running like Grogan.

Why would 20w/50 Dino not have it and why would the 2F care?

Wonder if the Lucas has it?

@Texican been preaching Castrol 20/50 long as I've known him

Butch turned me on to Castrol also. So, I contacted them in 2013 and they told me directly that the 20w-50 was not adequate for flat tappet. They have a 5w-50 to recommend but haven't tried it yet.

See attached document from Castrol direct.

No worries. I have a hard time believing he didn't know what he had in spite of his claim that he had a "clean Carfax"

So 15w-50 Mobile 1 Synthetic?

Is that "thick" like the 20w-50? That's what I'm going for. I've truly never heard of ZDDP or the lack of it.

31 years and 235,000 miles who knows if this motor has ever had oil with ZDDP in all that time.

Just sounds like Mud goobily-goop but hey, you are the rocket scientist

It's still a thick oil. At operating temp, it will be a 50w oil, just like the 20/50. At cold startup, it will be 15w.

Here was a pic of my cam earlier this summer. Use of the wrong oil or severe oil change intervals probably contributed to the spalding. Just trying to keep it going before it takes a s*** one day. Hopefully good oil will extend the life before rebuilding the whole engine.
I posted this pic before on Mud and the consensus was to keep running it as is.

Well it looks like I'll be going 15w-50
