Yeah I am thinking some degree shims for me because the steering wheel doesn't return to center but I don't care enough. Riding with bias ply tires rounds out the crazy steering feel along with a welded rear diff. If I park after taking a right turn the drivers side likes to sit low. Fun times. I can cruise at 55 MPH now without the squeal of the Gates belts now that I have Toyota belts. That's nice.

With the help of Rob and DNP, I am back on the road with the front knuckles redone, new brake pads, new tie rod ends. Also, had to bleed the brakes, since you have to disconnect the brake lines on my vehicle to do this job.

It was a long, dirty job and, in retrospect, it was tough deal for a newb like me. I learned a lot, though, including my present tech ceiling and limitations.

Even though I measured, counted threads and turns, etc.., I still ended up doing a hack job on the tie rod ends. And.... in my haste to put tires back on and finish the job, I got careless on the easiest part and somehow "pinched" the dust cover cylinders that go around the locking hub. In addition to earning me a Darwin award for least evolved human, it also gave me a nice wobble. I death wobbled into the alignment shop close to my house and got the kinks worked out professionally and so I am buttoned up in proper form now. It feels good and tight, so now I am going to get the diff fluid topped off since it is no longer leaking into my knuckles.

At least I have a funny story for the next meeting, and I don't mind laughing at myself (even publicly on the interwebs).

I'm not in the mood to turn a wrench again any time soon, but I'll tackle something a little more in my comfort zone until I earn my first banana.

Carry on and thanks again for the help and tips.

Congrats on earning your first merit badge! That's instant street cred right there. You'll have your OG status in no time.

Thanks, but I don't think you earn the merit badge (or any points towards OG credentials) when: (a) you leave your driveway and your steering wheel is upside down; and (b) in the 1/2 mile to the alignment shop you get flagged down by an old lady in a celica telling you that "your front wheels are wobbling like a grocery cart."

My Chevy Chase reply as I hand cranked the window down: "Thanks, but do you honestly think I don't know that?"

Again, wrenching has been added to the growing list of things I suck at.

This story ^^^ is 100% true and I anticipate it will be funnier when I tell it in person to some of you. :)

Looks like the one a JA kid drove. Dent in the passenger front door and brush guard. They wanted $17K for it three years ago. Supposedly it was in Laurel for Katrina and a tree fell on the roof. Another roof was sourced and welded on so they had a lot in the truck. Crazy thing was, the kid got a red jeep commander to replace it.
