I think a manual transmission will ruin the silky smoothness of the 80! Just my opinion, but i personally love wheelin' with an automatic; no pedal juggling on offcamber or crazy positions.

Not all of us are :princess:'s

:flipoff2:

I do enjoy the automatic transmission at times.... but it also pisses me off just as many times.... Overall the manual will be much better IMO.

A good 60 or 70 - 1 crawl ratio works well around here, so some lower gearing for the t-case will need to be addressed, which I know doesn't exist for the full time case.... hmmmmm

Come on Brian, don't mess a good thing up now!! I aint sayin' stop tinkering, but you have a kick ass truck as it is, now you are hopping the motor up, don't turn it into a trailer queen.

I would do it in a heart beat if I could afford it. I miss my 22RET 5 speed truck soo much. I still have the R151F thinking to put it in the 100 series someday. I beleive they are the same as H151F that came with diesel 100 series with the only difference being lower 1st gear ratio on the R series.

I was thinking from your last post you were starting to think about basically replacing the entire drive train (go towards crawler). I was hoping you would keep it bad ass but now with a super bad ass motor, keeping the 80 someone more 80........does that make any sense at all?

You have to go for it! I love hearing new ideas and seeing just where someone can take them ..... I could only hope to have the skills to create even a 1/10th of what others on the board have with their 80's.

Do it and all of your wildest dreams will come true. Listen to your heart, that's what I do.

I think you should do it. Do you see any issues regarding clutch pedal? And you'd better get ready to beef up those drive shafts. :D

Found a used 6 speed transmission from a 2005 2WD X-Runner Tacoma today, same low first gear... it may (???) be an easier adaptation due to the male output shaft. If not, the case and output shaft can be changed to 4WD units. If they are available, the flywheel, clutch, master and slave cylinders, shift lever, and various other parts will come with it.

Excellent bjowett.

This is getting very interesting.

Really hope you pull it off.

Just curious here, but what is prompting the newfound interest in putting in a manual? There have been trannies out for years you *could* have done this with if you bought (or fabbed if not available) adapters and such...why all the hoopla now? Is it the Toyota truck-ish 6-sp? I agree that'd be a sweet swap, just curious what's driving this craze.

Keep us posted...

Missed this one - Clutch pedal should not be too difficult.

You are almost there... New found interest = a new Toyota medium/heavy duty manual transmission AVAILABLE in the USA along with all replacement parts... seals, clutch, bearings.....

So does this six speed tacoma tranny bolt up directly to the FJZ engine without requiring an adapter?

Jared

Brian, you broke the 1,000 post mark dude! Nice...............

Is the output shaft from the 6speed's T/C going to line up with the axles? Or do you plan on keeping the 80's T/C?

P.S. GO FOR IT!!!!
