Looking at this downey adapter for my 6at to stock 4speed. Will it work? Which clutch? Saw the post about small diaphram chevy clutches and will those work on the cummins flywheel? Thanks

You have an auto tranny flexplate on the back of that engine...

Where is your flywheel?

Any adapter for a Chevy should work. That downey adapter doesn't look like a Chevy to me? Someone might dig that flexplate if you are going with a manual transmission, I think cruiserbrett and Aaron Leech in Utah were both looking for flexplates for a 6AT at some point...

Maybe I am wrong but it looks like a Chevy bolt pattern in there with the dowel pin sockets on the lower right and left. Looks like they made it to work with something else as well . The extra holes might be for Buick ,Pont,Olds as well.?
I would be using what ever downey spec'd on that BH.. A Chevy clutch disc on a LC 4 speed input is going to conflict. BTDT
I would not experiment.. I'd use what was enginneered for the Downey stuff. I would not experiment with chevy clutch forks either. Should be the same as if you were doing a smalll block conversion.

BTW.. I'd go for a built 700R4 on that 6AT, you are already set up for it. ... you won't be happy with LC a 4 speed behind there. I drove Royal Rose 4 speed ( sm 465) 6AT and hsi earlier Mistubishi Diesel swap and it really needed a 5th gear as he said... and I agreed.
700R4s came behind 6.2 and 6.5 diesels and held up well.

got this from the Downey site...

360° 4 SPEED BELLHOUSING ADAPTER
Downey’s 4 Spd. adapter is a thick wall 360° aluminum casting machined to deadly accurate specifications on our CNC mills. This bellhousing is deeper than a GM bellhousing to create the necessary input shaft spacing, plus it machine aligns the transmission to the engine. This adapter requires a special throw-out bearing and bearing retainer #93231 (not included), and includes a special slave cylinder mounting bracket.
331F4 4 Speed Bellhousing
$379.40
31121 Optional Rubber Plug
$17.92

Cool my mistake. I agree about the 5th gear. But Brian Steen has a Lc 4 speed in his pig and it is awesome but he has a ranger overdrive. Without that it would be a little slower...

Where?

I don't know, the guy I purchased the motor from said he gave/traded it to the guy he sold a bunch of his other motors to, I imagine they are piled up in some shop somewhere collecting dust. I have to chase down a bunch of "I know where his shop his.." kind of leads.
If I had a 700 tranny and the necessary adapter for a stock case or a split case that would great aside from some power loss to the auto. However I test drove a 40 with aforementioned setup and was impressed with the output. The owner stated that the flywheel did fit on one way and he believed that the motor was not totally internally balanced and would run smoother with the flywheel-that I don't have yet. He made his own flex plate with a chevy flex plate and the cummins ring gear off of the flywheel and a little machining.
The PO of the 6AT said the flexplate cost him $400, sound accurate? For now I want to keep it fairly simple and go with what I have, then if I stumble across an auto then I will go from there.
Ideally I would like to put this in a stretched 40 which would allow a long drivetrain but getting it in a rig and running would be an achievement of epic propotions for me.
Thanks for the downey info.

Too cool Kief... Also who kew it was so custom. I have heard Peak sales donw in TExas has flywheels and such for these engines, not sure though. You might want to give them a ring. I think they are under Cummins stuff as well. Cumminsstuff.com
