Well, I pulled the trigger on a rotted out v20 Chevy truck today. 80k mile 150hp reman jasper engine, new tires and batteries, and some nice resell-able parts.

The 3fe has been giving me a lean running condition and I am getting sick of farting with it. It still runs great down the highway, but its a gutless pig in the mountains. I also can't stand the lock up in the a440f either.

So right now the plan is to go 6.2 with a rebuilt 700r4 to either a split case or my full time case. Whatever I can find a deal on for the adapters will probably seal the deal.

Price and hopefully decent fuel mileage are the main factors for my choice in engines. In addition to that, I don't want a lift so that kicks out a few other options. This will be a highway cruiser 90% of the time so overdrive is a must.

If anyone has a used split case or adapter, please let me know. The 3fe & a440f will be for sale after I get it pulled, but that will be a few months. This will be a slow build, but I'm hoping that just means it will be well thought out! Any advice is always welcome as long as its good advice.

Pics will follow in the morning as I've been working and on the road since 6:30 and Easter sunrise services are early.. :)

Sub for the build.

Whats a v20 truck? Work truck? Whats a jasper engine?

Happy Easter. We just got home from Easter services and it was amazing.

A GM V20 is an 87-91 3/4 ton 4x4. R20 would be a 2 wheel drive
10 is a 1/2 ton, 20 is 3/4 ton and 30 is one ton.
C (2 wheel drive) and K (4x4) were 1st used.
A Jasper engine is a crate motor.

Well said..lol. Thanks.

Didn't mean to steal your thunder.
I've been thinking about a diesel conversion, I'll be following this one too.

No thunder stolen! I didn't know a v20 existed till I looked into this one...lol

Thought I'd add a bit about the jasper factor. My uncle is a fanatic about jasper engines... I'm not. I worked at a place that sold them for a few years and they were ok remans, but if you get into the horror stories online, there is plenty to read. I was back and forth with this truck because of that and finally thought about the quantity of product jasper moves. After thinking about the thousands of engines and transmission sold vs number of horror stories, I was a little less hesitant to buy it. It was used to pull trucks around a work yard for a good bit of its life, but it has 80 psi cold and 60 hot for oil pressure and no blow by. I think it will work out well. I didn't want the th400 trans so it was not important if it was in perfect shape. I can't wait to post pics after lunch... This thing is redneck like no truck I've owned. It's funny... I've swapped 2 Chevy v8s into other vehicles. The first was a 350 from a black full size 1986 truck into my black s10. The second is the 6.2 from this white truck into my white land cruiser.. I'm consistent at least.

Here's some pics of the truck and motor. The engine sticker says it dynoed at 150hp. I need to do more research on it to see what block and heads jasper really used for this. It was put in around 2004 or earlier.

Are you going to reuse the hood ornament? :grinpimp:

subscribed... good luck on the swap!

just out of curiosity... whats the expected fuel mileage of the 6.2?? since your priority was fuel mileage, i was just wondered

I'm hoping for 20. I make biodiesel so if I 50/50 blend that's some pretty cheep driving.

I'm having some trouble pulling the trigger on a 700r4. I found one from a buddy for free needing a rebuild and I found a fresh rebuild with a tcase from a 92 Chevy truck for 300 bucks. I'm pretty sure either will need to be fully upgraded to handle the low end grunt of the 6.2, so either would need work. My quote for a full upgrade tranny rebuild from the only shop I trust around here is 1k, so that's an option. After the doner truck and adapter with trans rebuild, I'm quickly approaching the $3k mark. I'm doing my best to stay around 2500 after parting out the extras and truck so I think that setup is doable. BUT...lol.... There's always a but....
Now I'm thinking about a 5spd and making an hf2a divorced. I have searched like crazy, but have not found anyone that has a final pic or outcome with this setup. I would love part time 4wd, but I have 2 hf2a cases here and it would simplify things if I use one of them. I also have an extra a440f tranny that is of questionable condition. I'm thinking about making my own adapter and see what I can come up with. I have lots of very gifted buddies and I'm a farm grown mechanic so it could get interesting. Right now I just need to settle on a tranny. Any thoughts would be great. I do really like the divorced case and I may just build a custom gas tank anyway so that's not a huge worry.

One other thing I could use some advice on is radiator choice. I'm planning to go with a custom rad or use the 6.2 rad, but its really big. Anyone know of a becool or similar that fits the 80?.

Like I said, this will be a slow start so the install is quick. I'm a parts collector and then I go nuts..lol. Thanks a lot guys.

Ask Tor from Torfab about the radiator. These 6.2 swaps are his bread and butter. Very clean results.

Well, I've switched gears a bit. I believe the 700r4 is out. I've got my eye on a $450 complete nv4500 setup and I believe I'll be going that route. Even if I don't get this one, I just feel safer with the manual trans. I'm also thinking pretty hard about using my np208 tcase and doing an offset driveshaft. I've done as much research on it as I can and have come up with.... It should work. If anyone can give me actual info saying otherwise, please do. I've found a lot of info on the older jeeps with this setup and they worked just fine. Some say driveline vibes are common over 65, but I think I'll take the chance unless an adapter to my awd tcase shows up for cheap. If it doesn't work, I'll just build an adapter or divorce the toyota case... I have a custom dual fuel tank in the works so the driveshaft hitting that won't be an issue.

It will def be a play by play decision.

So far I've recouped around 300 bucks off my doner truck and I still have almost the whole thing left. I should actually make money on that by the time I sell off the rears, tires, and crush it. More to come soon.

Long after my last post, I've finally got a transmission in the sights. Should be picking up a complete tranny and tcase from a 93 2500 chevy tomorrow. 300 bucks for the whole thing with a new 4.3 gm clutch in the box. Can't really go wrong at that price. I figure I can rebuild it and still be ahead.

Anyone know....What's the story for the external slave cylinders? Do they fit?

I'm going to go an unorthodox route and use the np208 from the chevy and go with an center tcase and an offset rear. A new gas tank will be in order, but that I can do. I've read lots of horror stories about drive shaft vibrations with this setup, but have talked to two people that run it in toy trucks that say it works fine. Well see, but unless I can fab up an adaptor for cheap to the cruiser case, I'm gonna try it.

Diesel adapters makes an adapter from the NV4500 to the Full time t case on your truck now. When you factor in the pain in the butt to build a tank and drivelines, shifters and speedo it maybe easier and cheaper to get an adapter.

150 hp? Lol
