Hi All:

Which Toyota engine is the 5VZ?

Regards,

Alan

One out of a late 90's Tacoma or T 100. Will probably bring the trans it is mated to over with it. So not sure if I will have an auto or 5 speed trans yet. Looks like the H55 might be out.

Only thing I see is that the drivetrain is pretty long on a 5VZFE. I'm surprised just how long the tranny is in my T100. Perhaps it will be close if the engine is moved forward, which will probably be required to get past the fire wall. Shifters may be further back still though, not sure. Rear out put of the transfer is centered. I guess a Cruiser Transfer could be adapted to the back of the low high part of the transfer case and give you dual boxes. That would probably be the cleanest way to do that.

As was shown in some of that Pirate thread above, the oil pan may be an issue. On my 4wd T100 the oil pan basically straddles the axle tube on the front IFS. The front sump part of the pan may be an issue on a 40. I bet the rear sump pan would be needed to clear the axle. Clutch slave is on passenger side. Exhaust goes down passenger side too. It will be tight to get the pipe out of the way of the front driveshaft. Radiaotor outlets not the same. Radiator for a 5VZFE is long and thin, has lower hose on drivers side, upper hose on passenger side, backwards to the 40. Not sure if a BJ40 has a different radiaotr possibly. Don't know if a 40 radiator will even be enough. I would think a 4 core from a 2F would be, but I don't know for sure.

I think you would have plenty of power, would probably really scream down the road. But the power curve is a little different compared to a F engine. It revs much faster and flies down the highway, but the lack of displacement shows on the hills. Engine braking is okay, but it is still a small engine. And I have honeslty been somewhat dissapointed with the low range crawling in my T100. I have the manual 5 speed, but even in low range, she does not crawl very good, and in high range, 1st gear is pretty high. The dual box would be very nice for options while off-roading. The V-6 just won't lug down like the inline-6.

Electrically it will be a bit of a challenge. I'm sure a 5VZFE needs a speed sensor for the computer. I know my 4/73 FJ40 has a speed sensor in the dash cluster for the emmissions system. I think it may work for this. Check on some of the 3FE conversion discussions, guys discussed what type of sensor had to be present to make the speed sensor work on the 3FE computer. O2 sensors are a must, I think the temp and oil and such will work with the 40 series dash. You will need the computer that comes with the truck I believe. Put the computer high under the dash to keep it dry. There are some differences between the years and computers.

John Ward of TLC put Tacoma drivetrains in FJ-40 bodies as a prototype before the FJ-Cruiser came out. Perhaps he would have some insight on fit.

There's probably some in the hardcore corner, and a couple folks local to Rising Sun here in Denver have done the swap or are currently working on it. I think that typically the associated drivetrain components that came with the engine are kept.
