I'm just cranking my TBs, adding 285s and getting a 75-822 w/ a better antenna. Good enough I think.

Many of you are asking about t-shirts and as @bluecruiser mentioned, we're working on something unique for this year. We're also working on having hoodies available! This is something we've wanted to do for the last few years, but logistics and cost have held us up. This should be a great year for event shirts. We'll keep you posted! Trail run request forms will be sent out shortly too. Rest assured, you will get to run all the trails you want. We will be offering a Black Bear Run all 3 days. We also have a special run in the works for those who like taking photos. With all the moisture we've had in Colorado, this should be another banner year for wildflowers.

Ok-I have lots of questions but will only deal with the time sensitive ones right now as I can research most of my other questions so please bear with me.

1. Looking at renting an RV and flat towing the LX. Will I be kicked out if I show up with an RV to camp in? Would it even fit or be able to make it to the campsite? I figure it would be fun to get it stuck and hook up a few trucks to winch it out-that scene should have been in the movie RV.

2. Guess I need to go back and look for a basic itinerary for the 3 days but I thought it was mainly the dinner Fri. night, all day Sat. and some make a few runs on Sunday? I see people showing up on Thursday and 3 days of Black Bear? Anyone have some feedback so I'll know when to make a reservation for motel/rv and when to leave TX? Considering leaving a day early and meeting up in Alb. with ntsaint on Thursday but originally was looking at more of a northern route through Ratan and Walsenburg. Don't know which one is more scenic but we will be going to Ruidoso on our way back so that would take us through Alb. anyway. I'll be staying in CO the following week so trying to decide if it's worth the extra day to be there on Friday since we could be there all day on Sun. for mor trails.

3. If anyone has a list of items they pack/bring for the truck and family please PM it to me. I have the list for when I go racing so will plan similarly but always good to see the lists of experienced guys as inevitably there will be things I never considered.

I definitely want to order more shirts, too.
285 KO2's were installed this morning-now it needs the running boards removed, wheels painted or replaced. Planning to use this event to learn and see what is needed for mods. But thinking I should at least get sliders so I an do more trails. Interested if anyone has some to sell/rent.
Planned to by a CB but now I guess I'll look into the HAM and license. Let me know how long it takes to get the license. I know nothing about either so do they use the same frequencies with everyone on the same channel? I do remember CB's when I was a kid and wondered if truckers are still on them to see if that would entertain the kids on the ride out.

Lastly-just to introduce myself I'll be 42 by then and coming with my wife, daughters 17 & 8, plus my boy who is 4. Leaving from Plano, TX. Showed my wife some info. about it after signing up and looks like this is going to also cost me a special camera lens-incredible pics from the last event. The first of many but a huge thanks to the organizers who put this together and willing to teach someone who hasn't offroaded before,

The spot where we are camping is quite big but spread out. You will see all kinds of set ups like roof top tents, side tents, off road trailers, pop up trailers. I would say you should find some area to park the rv since I've seen them at that location before! Just stay away from something too big. Largest thing attendees have brought were pop ups and camper on truck bed.
The organizers will be able to tell you better since we might be expecting around 40 or so 100s! Space will go fast!
You definitely want to be there for Friday runs so plan on arriving Thursday sometime!

I'll answer a couple questions:

Try to be there on Thursday so you can get a full day of runs in Friday. Sunday winds up being more of a half day.

The trip from ABQ up is a lot more scenic than going through Ratan.

Get a cheap handheld CB for this year...way easier and one less thing to worry about. When you are with the group you don't need much range.

Most important thing is water intake! Whatever you planned on bringing make sure to double or triple it! Don't drink it and you are sick. Just like that!

Food - whatever you like + easy stuff for the trails. You can buy food nearby but after 3 or 4 days it adds up fast, specially with family!

Good tires a must but you got them already. Remove running boards and add sliders if you wish but don't have to. It's not like you are heading to the harder stuff anyways.

Bring a camera for sure! You'll be mad if you don't have one around 24hrs!

Ham or cb will do, I have both. It definitely changes the trail experience when everyone is connected.

Thanks for the replies so far. That is what I was afraid of. Unfortunately to be able to tow a LC/LX since it's over 5k pounds it's pretty much going to put me into a huge Class A diesel-like a 40 footer! Similar to what I have seen Slee post pics of flat towing. All the smaller ones are limited to 5k pounds. I'm still considering it since my kids have a fascination with big RV's and this event is only a small part of this vacation. The rest of the time we would be at a few RV parks.
Great info. that I'll start adding to my prep list.
Now, I'll see about planning to arrive earlier.

My 2 cents. Sliders are a good idea for wagons with no lift but certainly not a necessity. I went 5 years without them, and wheeled a bunch. You won't really need them for most of the trails in this area. I think I even still had my running boards on when I went to HITH #3. Regarding CB or HAM, don't push yourself to get licensed in 2 months. It's possible but not that easy. Just buy a cheap CB and you'll be fine.

Okay, who's going from central Cali and want to caravan? The idea is to leave on Wednesday from Stockton and camp in Vagas that evening and leave in the morning for Ouray.

I can also go the opposite direction too, stop in Reno or in Salt Lake CIrty

Send me a PM.

Get Outside, you're still going?

I am. Leaving from Nipomo (near Pismo).

Is anyone leaving from Southern California? I will be driving up with the girlfriend and dogs from San Diego either Wednesday night or Thursday early morning.

I would suggest you leave wednesday or you will be arriving at camp pretty late on thursday! And that is if you guys do it in a straight shot!

This is a great point. The HAM radio I referenced in the first few posts is cheap, but very confusing to program and use. Especially for someone with no HAM radio experience. It does not come with a program cable. It also does not include a 12v charger and you cannot use it for comm unless you have your Amateur Radio License.

Please have a working CB for this event. I can't stress enough how important it is to communicate while on the trail. The trail leaders will use it to let you know about dangerous sections and things to avoid (holes, sharp rocks, problem areas)

Please do not show up with just a handheld ham radio in a box and no other form of communication. Have a cb that works and if you have a ham, feel free to bring it along. Setting up the handheld ham is somewhat of a PITA. Especially if you can't use it for comm anyway.

With that being said, I'm happy to show you how to load a frequency and program your HAM radio if you pass your FCC test prior to the event. The majority of trail comm will be via CB though.

Lastly, you cannot pass your test on Wednesday before the event and talk on the radio on Friday. It takes about two weeks for your callsign to be generated and official on the FCC site.

I haven't decided what day and time yet because I'm waiting for a body of mine to say if he's going or not. I'm leaning on taking off Tuesday and arriving sometime Wednesday afternoon as of now but we'll see.
The other thing is if you stop in Vegas you'll have a really long drive the next day! Last year I stopped in Saint George and cuts the drive down by about 2 to 2 1/2 hrs for the last leg.

Outer Limit Supply has donated and is auctioning a full Expo Medial Kit on our Facebook page. 100% of the proceeds go to the Wheeling with Warriors project. This is the exact first aid kit that I carry. Hopefully, you'll never need some of the serious stuff, but if you ever do, you want a quality first aid kit ready. It will be delivered to HIH or if you can't make the event, we will mail it directly to your house and even pick up the shipping costs. Giving back is important to us and thanks to the folks at OLS, we can help a great cause and get someone a great first aid kit at the same time. (Current bid is $100 by @ntsaint) Thanks Andy! Bidding is up to $150 $160 $175 on Facebook

I'd like to meet up with some folks from TX heading to ABQ. Need an address for the gps. I suppose that will come closer to the date.

Do we bid on it here or elsewhere?

$125.

suck it, Andy!!! :)

Elsewhere...and I'm not gonna help you find the right place! :D

Thanks Ben....
and Andy!

You must bid via the Facebook link.

And this brings up another great point and something that we (as HIH Directors) really think is the most important part of this event, friendship. I have had the opportunity to be on the trail with Andy (@ntsaint) and Ben (@fireball). Without this event, they would just be forum names to me and to each other. The reason why HIH remains a small event and the overall numbers stay restricted is so we can put real names and faces with these forum names.
