After grabbing some fall color a couple weeks back in the mountains of Utah I wanted to share more with my Jen. Leaving Wednesday for 5 days searching for fall color. First stop Sedona and then Flagstaff, South Rim, Lower North rim, back way up to the upper North rim, and from there Im just going to follow the color to where ever it leads us.

take more good photos. have a great time leaf-peeping!

Still not much color change on the rim. Best seen so far is the weed that has been turning red around the property.

Part of the area on the 300 Rd is closed because of the September fire which was caused by a UTV going off the rim and starting on fire. Believe all four people were killed.:( Not sure about the Aspen trees in the peaks north of Flagstaff but on the rim colors generally start to change in early October. Probably start making regular trips over to the rim starting next week.

getting all the use out of that Maltec you can, Phil!

secret sales plot? :princess:

Not much like snow on the Mogollon rim. Coldest we seen was 41 degrees. Wasn't much over two weeks since the run. Second night was 8,000'+ and light sleeping bag was plenty warm. Was in a snow storm early October close to where next month's run will end. But that was around twenty years ago. Figure when the hummingbirds stop visiting the feeder will be a indicator that fall is on its way.

With no color I wont be anywhere near the rim this weekend. As for being cold I say bring it on in a big way because i have cabin heat:flipoff2:

Reference to cooler was solely for night time lows that generally needed to cause the leaves to change. Now that that I think about did see some fall colors on Flagstaff. Some really nice trees with redrleaves in Walmart's parking lot. There were not native trees thought. Temperature have been warm the last couple days but suppose to be cooling off starting tomorrow. Should be great weather to search for fall colors.

As for needing a heater been elk hunting in below zero temperatures without a heater. I was sure to consume enough antifreeze in the evening.:D Only time I remember once getting my 68 FJ40 to idle in the morning put the transfer in neutral and transmission in gear to warm the oil up so it wasn't so hard to shift.

No pictures but we did see aspens starting to change in the White mountains at 9k, Elk are talking, not that cool yet. Lows in the upper 40s.

When I lived in Flag, you could just about set your watch (sundial, calendar) by the changing of the Aspens on the Peaks. 2nd week in October and you will see changes up there and then watch the change creep down the mountain. 3rd week to Halloween is the sweet spot.

Phil,

Have all the leaves changed in Utah and Colorado? I was hoping to take the kids up for a drive to Telluride and over to Monticello, etc. around the 6th of October.-10th. Is that way too late for Colorado/Utah?

No 5 days of color for us as a family member has some medical issues (everyone is now fine) that kept us in town. Did run some rarely traveled desert FR with Ms LCP for an afternoon of peace and quiet.

Went to the rim yesterday. Not a sign of any colors yet. Elevation was between 7,500' and 7,800. Shortly after we got there smoke from a controlled burn rolled in and we headed back. Only color seen was a few trees on FS road 95 heading down into East Clear Creek. If the Tinder Fire had any effect.:meh:

Best colors are still the weeds in the area.

39 degree here this morning expect to see some leaves changing pretty soon.

@Living in the Past, those weeds are fetid goosefoot. They are inconspicuous all summer long, but sure are pretty in mid September!

Thanks, Eric. My wife calls it stink weed. I use a weed eater on the dog's yard to keep them from smelling. Since we are a Fire Wise community we keep the ground fairly clear which has helped them take hold. We have heavy concentration of them on our property. Depending on how much sun they get has determined which ones change first. Unlike the maples on the rim these are staying red for quite a while. Still have some that haven't even started to turn red yet. These are fairly new in our area and this is by far the most we have ever had.

Traveling to Show Low this morning, just saw this first bit of yellow in the aspens. Not widespread yet, but it is getting real close. This is off the 260 at the road to Young.
