This problem just started happening. Came home from being gone for a few months and the shifter moves laterally to 4L from 4H, but will not push back up into 2H. Tried all sorts of ways to get it to move but it's like there's no gear space to push it in to. Any suggestions.

Try backing up a bit then shift into 2 hi.

I gave that a shot earlier but didn't go too far back. I'll try it with more distance tomorrow.

Try unlocking your front hubs then driving a little bit. Once it comes out don't try to put it back in if you are moving.

Are you sure it is shifting out of 4L into N and then 4H correctly? You should be able to tell by how it drives.

One trick I've heard is switching the vacuum lines to the solenoids for the 4wd. On the firewall by the window wiper motor are two solenoids. You can either swap the tubes to see if that's the problem, or just replace the solenoid. From what I've been told, its expensive from Toyota, but they are only sprinkler valve solenoids with a Totoya label. I haven't tried it before, but I've heard it works. Just a thought.

visually inspect it. If it looks like it's all normal take the pressure off the detent ball in the 4 wheel drive shift rail.
On the outside of the "cone" that the front drive shaft comes out of you'll see either a round switch with two wires coming out of it
( on models with a working "4wheel drive" dash light) or there will be a low profile bolt. Without going out to look at it , I believe it's
a 17MM head. If you have the bolt variety there will be a spring and a ball bearing under it. The ball bearing drops into a detent in the shift rail to hold it in
gear. If the Spring breaks or the bearing wears down to small it can jam like you say. If you have the switch model , the spring loaded bearing is built
into the end of the switch. Back either one out or remove them and try shifting
