4wd Problems (1 Viewer)

Hi all,
I apologize if this has been posted about already, but I searched and cannot find anything.
I have an 83 BJ60 with a 5 speed. My 4wd is having some issues right now. When the hubs are locked and I attempt to put it in 4wd high, the transfer case pops in to 2wd as soon as I hit the gas. It will idle in 4 wheel, but as soon as I so much as think about hitting the gas it pops out. If I put it in 4wd low, it will stay in 4 low. If I keep the hubs unlocked, it will stay in "4wd high,' but obviously the 4 wheel does not work without the hubs locked. Any ideas?

Time to rebuild the transfer case...or you could try replacing the 4WD shift compression spring with one that is firmer.

Or just strap the transfer lever when it's in 4wd so it won't pop out of gear.

That's what I figured. Is it difficult to do with a floor jack and a socket set?

Where can I pick up a new spring? This wont require me to pull the case out, correct?

Any Toyota parts dealer.
You can do it in 15 minutes. The case doesn't need to be disassembled.

How are your engine/tranny mounts?

They are doing pretty well. No cracking or excessive swelling from either. I will double check that tomorrow, as well as the spring.

I had the same problem and ended up being the spring and detent ball. Whoever had the truck before me put one in backwards

I went looking for that spring today but I cannot find it online, nor at the Toyota dealer or any parts store. Where did your source yours?

Nobody will have it (or anything else for your cruiser) in stock. All you need is the part number, then order it from any Toyota parts dealer anywhere.
