Hi Everyone,

I noticed the truck was occasionally slipping out of 4H during a snow storm last week (Lever would slide forward), so I bought a new compression Spring to hopefully rectify the issue (the trans is brand new so its not the tranny ). Aside from a poor Toyota Service Bulletin, I have no idea what i'm looking for down there..

Does anyone have a picture of their transfer case that I can reference to find the spring bolt? Some searching led me to discover its a quick job, but this is my first time playing with the transfer case as a shade tree mechanic. My reference thread is below

TSB for transfercase detent springs (problems with H4 or L4 slipping out)

If I'm laying under the truck is it driver or passenger side of the case? Just trying to get an idea before I go digging under there after work, snow is coming tonight. If there's anything I should know before I do it please let me know! any help is appreciated

is it the bolt closest to the fork shaft in this pic?

Yes, next to the 4wd indicator switch.

To avoid confusion. Circled in red :)

@Mace was a little quicker. shoot

Definitely need thread sealer. Not locktite.

Clean off all the oil on the threads as well as you can before applying.

Use something like Permatex aviation form-a-gasket thread sealant. Any auto parts store has it.

I didnt know there was an upgraded stronger spring. Thanks for that info. My transfer has never jumped out of gear though.
Definitely making a trip to autozone then, mine slipped out twice but eventually got seated and stayed in gear. Debated just stretching the spring a bit but no need to cut corners for a 6 dollar part if it's new

Considering there is a sealing washer on that "bolt" I have never used any sealant on the threads. Never had one leak there either.

I used Permatex High Temp thread sealant. Looks like they have a non-high temp one as well.

As Mace says I bet it's not 100% needed, but it's just peace of mind for me :)

Yeah, I guess the word "definitely" for that spring retainer bolt may not be the correct word. I was thinking about the switch right next to it. I've had trouble sealing that in the past.

On my list of things to do

dunno, but will order a set monday....

above pic should be the ones for a 40/60 split case.

I believe the upgraded spring/ball is from cases that got bolted into FJ62s ... ?

Yes, the original technical bulletin regarding the stronger spring was initially targeted for the FJ62. See below. But when you run that lock ball compression spring PN through the Toyota parts number machine, it's current fitment now includes the FJ60 TFR case as well. .. A silent update.

Not any more!
Gunna get one of those now.

isn't there 2 of these springs and balls ? one on the side and one on top? or is it only the side one that is the issue?

odd, my spring part # still shows up for the 81-87, which is what I asked for.

Yeah I guess the issue that triggered the tech bulletin was less than ideal shifting with that shift fork shaft with the FJ62. Then I guess they figured it was good for the 60 as well. Who knows...

Haven't checked if it has replaced the other one too.

I guess I confused. Do I replace just the front drive spring on(on the side) shown in the tech bulletin?

Or do I also need to replace the other one, the high/low spring , which looks like it's on the top. I will admit, I have not crawled under to look if the top on is accessible.

My 60 has slipped out of low before, I messed with the inner boot and it seems to be fine now....but want to replace the spring anyway
