Hey all,

I have an '88 Fj62 with a 3FE engine. The differential locks work, I can't rotate the front driveshaft when I engage them.

That said, the 4WD light won't turn on when I press to engage it, and 4WD doesn't appear to be working. Does anyone have any idea of what might be happening?

Also, when I'm driving the check engine light sometimes comes on. I have the factory manual supplement, but it doesn't supply the codes. Can someone please supply a link with the check engine codes? I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.

Those aren't differential locks, those are locking hubs. Your problem is the 4wd solenoid doesn't work. Do a search on this forum for information and solutions. If you give us your code, we can tell you what it is. But....the manual has nothing? Even Haynes has the codes. Time to get something better.

Try to disengage the locking hubs and push the 4wd button. Now try to turn the driveshaft. If it turns, it's not working.

It could just be the bulb.

Depending where you live check the vacuum hosed at the transfer case. Mine rotted and broke off. Fixed the line and problem solved

Haha mine wont turn off.

If its not going into 4wd then its the solenoid... here is how to fix int for 23 bucks https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/224061-writeup-1988-fj62-4wd-solenoid-fix-17-77-a.html... your issue is the top solenoid not bottom like this thread shows. for the time being you can swap hoses.... or suck on the bottom solenoid hose, the one facing the front of the car.

SUPER EASY fix :banana::wrench:

as for 8960SERIES.... yours is the bottom solenoid same thing happened to me use the link to fix it :cheers:

Same thing happened to my '89 FJ62. Bothered me for months until I verified the 4WD was working as expected. I popped the 4wd switch out of the dash and stuck my finger up inside where the bulb was supposed to be (right behind the 4WD lettering). It was loose and hanging in there and not lit up. I pushed it all back together and it came on! I replaced the bulb anyway and it works fine now. Hope yours is that easy.

Hey, I know this is an old thread. But for anyone browsing, the problem was indeed the vacuum solenoid valve. Thanks for the help, guys. I used the part
Rock Cruiser and it worked like a charm.

Yep I have the same problem locks into 4wd but won't pop out, I've got another set of replacement one to put it, it's on the list :)
