Hi all. I have an 83 bj40 that has a 4 bolt mounting plate and a 4 bolt steering column base plate.
I've seen 3 bolt with 3 bolt and 3 bolt with 4 bolt steering columns, but did toyota ever make a 4 bolt mounting plate with 3 inner holes for the steering column? Hopefully I'm making sense here.... basically I'm looking for a 4 bolt mounting plate that has 3 holes for a power steering column with a 3 hole base plate.
The picture is my current 1983 bj40. Appreciate anyone's input.

Do not believe Toyota ever made one. In the US market changed to a collapsible steering column on the 8/80+ FJ40. Those the manual or power steering changed the mounting. Power steering requires a shorter shorter shaft inside the steering column. The non collapsible shaft requires more work to shorten. The collapsible just requires shortening the lower shaft and drilling a new hole to relocate a pin. Here are two diagrams I found in the internet that show the difference between the two.

Canada and possibly a few other markets had the LHD collapsible column. Never seen a listing for RHD.

Believe you're confusing the collapsible steering as power steering column. The collapsible column was for safety and available in both manual and power steering versions. It was a change in some markets like the US. I have two of these columns. Both are for manual steering. To convert the manual collapsible to power just requires cutting the short shaft down and drilling It for the pin shown in the diagram. The non collapsible version started in 9/72 and was used until the end of the 40 series. As of 1/79 a power steering version was available as an option. Only difference is the length of the steering shaft inside on the original style.

I’m guessing you’re using the electric power steering? My dad is looking at the same issue. I believe he plans on modifying a plate to make it work, but it will be awhile before he gets around to it.

Hey thanks again for all the info. Yes that is all correct and I appreciate it. However I have an 83 power steering column. I just need the proper firewall mounting plate.

Does anyone have a firewall plate that mounts to the firewall with 4 bolts and receives the steering column with a 3 bolt triangle pattern? My current plate has a 4 bolt receiver (see pic above) , I need a 3 bolt please.

Thanks, I'm installing an OEM factory power steering. Although the electric sounds like it has a lot of positive reviews.

Post a picture of your power steering column to see what your issue is.

That is a collapsible steering column. Those were made in both manual and power versions. Only difference on the collapsible steering column versus a manual is the short column on the end. On the style you have power steering was only a different inner shaft that was shorter. The collapsible used a different bracket at the firewall. The connection to the bottom of the dash was stouter and a permanent part of the column. Not just a two piece clamp like you have. I am unaware of any plate at the firewall that allowed collapsible column to use on the standard a column plate.

thank you again. Yes that is correct, it is collapsible and shorter shaft for PS. Yes, I need the different bracket that mounts to the firewall with 4 bolts, and receives the PS collapsible column with 3 bolts. Please see pics. ( unless I am crazy here and completely missing it, but I just need this firewall plate)

I have never seen a three bolt column to three bolt plate. Plates have all been four bolt. The outline of the collapsible column is different than the solid shaft column. Will still need to modify the firewall if you do find the correct plate.

Did you ever find the correct plate for your swap? If you did, I’m oddly in the market for your original plate!

Hi, sorry for the delay. YES, I fortunately was able to source the 3 bolt plate along with rest of the proper OEM parts. Everything bolted up perfectly with no modifications. Not sure if I want to sell any parts, but the plate you are looking for seems way easier to find than the one I needed. I'll keep an eye out for you if I come across one.
