like said above, 80 series tows much better. if you insist on the 62 series don't pull anything over 2500~3000 lbs with the auto trans = DOGG. for the 60, the stock 4 spd will do it but the H55 trans would do wonders. i've been pulling my boat & trailer (3500lbs) around for years with my 60 with no issues. yes, slow but be easy.

I am doing a 6.0 vortech swap/4l65e in my 80 right now because I wanted ff axles, 4wdisc, coils, and a body that wont rust nearly as bad, but I love 62's and have owned a few. I will say that the A440F is a GREAT auto tranny, If maitained properly it is a 2-300K AUTO!!!! why does everyone talk trash on this auto? the ONLY reason I am not leaving one behind my 6.0 is shift point issues.

Ive got 220+K on my A440 and it works flawlessly. Im one of the few (it seems) who LIKES to wheel an AT.
My only complaint is the power loss.
In addition, ive read so many tranny obituaries here, that tends to skew my perspective.
I may look into an H55 down the road for the ability to use a toybox, and free up that lost HP, but aside from that, I cant say anything bad about the auto set up I have.
However, I do think this gentleman would be miserable trying to tow anything with a 62. Mileage is s***, and the power just isnt there!

I'm converting from a stick so that I can wheel an auto and I'm excited about it. So you're not the only one who likes or wants to wheel with an auto.

the 62's have better power than a 60 and get better MPG. I drove a nice stock 1990 back to colorado from AZ. last spring, I went through SW colorado, durango, silverton, etc... so I was not easy on it. I was AMAZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got 17mpg in the mountains driving the hell out of it, and it never dropped below 50mph on the steepest passes, I was taching it up there a lot but it did it. I prefer a stick on the street but I would wheel that auto over a 4 speed.

I had an 87 Fj 60 and later a 94 Fj80. I now have an fj40(77) and a FJ62. I have to say each one is very individual the way it drives but the 60 and the 80 were probably my two favorite to drive on a daily basis. I did some wheelin in both and aside from 31's and 265's they remained stock but both took be back and forth to Raleigh and Richmond Virginia more times than i can count and were quite comfy on the road. I towed my fj40 home with my 80 from Richmond and it did fine so if you want a moderate slow car that runs great once its on the highway go with an 80. If you are just wanting to have something dependable to take you around town and on some road trips with passengers but not towing, get a 60.

Mine is far from stock form any more, which doesnt aid in the fight for power and and better fuel economy.
17MPG is pretty good though even in comparison to a lot of the other numbers that have been thrown out here.
Before my SOA, I did 16 MPG driving to DV from Reno with the rig LOADED. I was AMAZED at that.

I own one of each and have few more out on the farm....I am thinking about putting the guts of one of my FJ62's into my old FJ40... has someone evern done this?

BIGBURTHA says: The a440f in the fj62 is not ideal, (automatic is never ideal,) but it will outrun and out accelerate a H42 manual 60 any day of the week and twice on Sunday. It is a pleasure to drive a tuned and healthy 3FE with A440F auto. I can run 70+ MPH all day in the Fj62.

Would the FJ40 run smoother and faster with 3FE and A440F set up?
